Hi marcoss46210423,

we recently had some users in the forum that couldn't rename objects in the Layers panel and one who couldn't rename states of an MSO. The reason is a bit unclear, could be a bug with your version of InDesign and the version of the operating system. For the renaming issue in the Layers panel Rob Day wrote an ExtendScript (JavaScript) that is working on a selected object. For example your MSO that refuses to be renamed using the MSO panel.

One solution was:

Tried it. Didn't work. I will try the script you shared! Thanks a bunch!

BTW, if you're using MSOs a lot, you'll want this free add in.

It did not work, either.

Just checked and is working fine. It is a subtle selection process, though. Click on the name of the state, pause, then click one more time, right on the name. This second click will select the name in such a way it can then be changed.

I get it, but it's just not working on my Indesign software. I have no idea why.

Hmmm... when the software itself seems wonky, it's standard to reset preferences. https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/indesign-preferences-support-file-locations.html

Delete InDesign preferences with shortcuts

You can delete the replaceable InDesign SaveData and InDesign Defaults files by holding down the following keys while InDesign is launching:

  • Windows: Shift+Ctrl+Alt
  • Mac OS: Shift+Control+Option+Command

The script won't help with that but it will help with managing the MSOs. You know you can change the name in the layers panel, too.

"Undock the Layers Panel and let it float. Clicking on the name should now allow the name to be edited. It appears that this feature doesn't work for renaming Page Items that are under the layers if the Layers Panel is docked."

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/how-do-you-rename-a-sublayer-object-in-the-layer-s-panel-of-...

The other solution was Rob's script when the object, in your case your MSO, was selected.

The code for this ExtendScript (JavaScript) is posted in this thread:
