Hi, We have been supplied an indesign file for a brochure. There are a few missing fonts in the document. We have been told the correct replacement fonts (ITC AvantGuardGothic Std), which we have purchased.
When we replace the fonts though, the font font size is wrong for the container box. The size is about 3 pts too large, consequently, the text won't fit in the container anymore.
Does anybody know what is causing this? As going through the whole brochure to resize qll the fonts is a bit of a nightmare.

I've personally had one or two issues relating to the Avant Garde font family - mostly arising from the fact that there are so many different versions. Best thing is to make sure everyone is using just the one version, because things get messy when you have to chop and change.
As for the current situation, is there not a script somewhere that you can use to adjust the text across the entire brochure by 3pts?
Personally, I think there should be an option for text boxes which is similar to the feature you have with images where you can force it to resize to fit the container box perfectly. However, this is just one of many UI/UX omissions when it comes to InDesign.

Are you not using Paragraph (and Character) Styles for your documents; it makes it so easy to make changes to fonts – style, size, weight, tracking, and much more.

There could be several factors involved with what you're experiencing.
First of all, depending on what font was used in the document, the font itself could have been updated in the version that you purchased. I've seen this before. If you choose Type > Find Font, and click on the missing font and choose More Options, you'll see the details of the missing font including what version of the font was used in the document.
Now replace the font with the one the you purchased and look at the Find Font info again. Is the version different? Also pay attention to the format or (Type) as listed in the Info section of the Find Font dialog box. The font could be TrueType, Postscript, or OpenType. Replacing one with the other could cause the adjustment that you're seeing.
Not to overstate the obvious, but to save yourself the frustration, ask the original author to send you the fonts that were used. If you purchased a copy of the fonts, then you shouldn't have to be concerned with breaking any licensing restrictions.

Cheers Chad,
Not always easy when your client has fallen out with them! We ended up biting the bullet and resizing the text. It ended up being quicker than searching for the issue!
Thanks for your help though.
