Snap to object - diagonal line?

Hello,

Is there a way to get objects to snap to a diagonal line object? Many of our corporate ads have 12 degree angles which can make lining and spacing objects a bit tricky sometimes. I know you can snap to vertical and horizontal grid, guides, etc., but is there a way to snap on a diagonal line or path? See screenshot below. The yellow line is my "guide" and how I line things up on a diagonal but wondering if there's a setting that will allow objects to snap to another diagonal object?

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Thank you so much! If there is currently no way to snap on the diagonal, this is probably the best and easiest solution. Greatly appreciate your suggestion!

Hi together,

unfortunately even if the guides are rotated by 12° you cannot snap to guides like that.

How to rotate guides?

Do the following on a additional master page:

Add some guides.

Rotate the master page to -12° with the Transformation panel.

RotatedMasterPage-1.PNG

The guides will not rotate along with the master page.

Apply the rotated master page to your page. The guides from the rotated master will be visible as rotated guides:

But, as I already said, you cannot snap objects to the visibly rotated guides.

Thank you!! This works perfectly! Now, I need to look up how to save this master page so it is accessible moving forward and not only in the file I worked on. Thanks again!

Hi TallmanShortWoman,

there is another method to get rotated guides on a page.

But this method is a bit fragile:

The guides will not survive export to IDML and open IDML as document.

Nevertheless, here we go:

1. Select one single guide on a page.

2. Export the selection to an IDMS snippet file.

Or store the selction as asset to an InDesign library file.

3. Draw out a little text frame, select the first insertion point of the frame.

4. Place the snippet from step 2.

Now you have added a guide to a text's insertion point as anchored object.

Rotate the text frame as you like. Watch your Layers panel.

Yes. Now comes the best thing:

You can see and select the guide from the Layers panel:

RotateTextFrame-Guide-is-Anchored-to-Text-2.PNG

You also could hide the guide individually by hiding the text frame that holds it.

That cannot be done with individual selected guides you are drawing out of the rulers.

Here I added the guides context menu:

But there is also an issue with this method:

You cannot snap objects to that anchored guide.
