I want to align the first column in this tab list on the letters, so that the asterisks hang past the letters. Part of the problem is I'm not sure what this is called. Using another tab for the asterisk didn't work because the asterisk was too far from the letters. Suggestions anyone?
Use a decimal tab for the first tab stop, and change align on from a . to a *

I guess the critical question is: How much are you attached to using a right-align tab for the first column?
If you use either a left-align tab, the column will appear to align by the letters, and not the asterisk. With a center-align tab, there will be a slight, but consistent mis-alignment you can dial down with kerning settings. Using the right-align tab reads all the characters, including the asterisk. And unfortunately, as you've discovered, you're really built to lose there.
