P: Can't Import Certain Videos, says "File Contains no Video Frames"

I posted this issue to the forum: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10739124 

No resolution. In sum, I upgraded my Mac OS and LR to most recent versions, but still can't seem to import select videos into the catalog on my upgraded mac mini, but can do so on my iMac.  Makes NO sense whatsoever.

It says the following error, file contains no video frames: Dropbox - Screenshot 2018-11-12 18.01.55.png

BUT I can open the file using File Explorer/Finder and it is fine. Also, it imports fine on my other mac.

 Here is the video.  Can you try to see what happens on your end?

 The file count is different on my iMac than my Mac Mini, for same folders. Makes no sense, but clearly my Mac Mini is not able to import all the files but my iMac can.

I get there error on Mojave. Are you on Mojave on both your Macs?

Scott, please copy the first ten lines from the menu command Help > System Info. That will show the precise versions of "the latest" you're running and remove ambiguity. (LR is notorious for fooling people into thinking they're on "the latest".)

I observe the same behavior with my LR 8.0 / Mac OS 10.13.6.

As observed in the original thread, changing the file extension from .mov to .mp4 avoids the error.

However, ExifTool shows the file is in Apple QuickTime format, not MP4 (they're nearly but not identical). So the .mov extension should be the correct one -- strange the LR chokes on it.

Scott, as requested above, could you please post the System Info (available in LR under menu Help -> System Info) contents for both the Mac machines - the one on which it works, and the one where you get an error on importing?

I am getting this behavior in LR Classic 8.1 with CR 11.1 on Windows 10. Videos created on an iPhone 7 in MOV format are giving me this same error.

I am having the same issue and am able to play all MP4s on any of 4 other players I have so know they are ok.  Even the ones converted from iPhone work on other players.  However,  one recently is not playing or coming over at all and get the message 'contains no video files' as others above have noted.

I had the same problem with the recent batch of travel photos and videos. A Google search found this thread but nothing helpful here.

Then I somehow figured a way that worked for me. Just wanted to share here and hope it'll help some users.

As most of the videos taken with exactly the same cameras were imported fine, the problem may not be so much with the file format, codec or whatever. And I remember they were actually imported the first time round but with a white exclamation mark in a black circle and without previews. Subsequent imports failed completely with the error "File Contains no Video Frames".

First, I isolated all the videos failed to be imported. Then I created a Catalog from scratch and, imported the videos. Whala, the videos were imported perfectly fine! The next step is to reopen the original Catalog and import from that newly created Catalog. There you go.

You don't give enough information to offer you much help. What version of LR? Mac or Windows? How are you trying to get the videos into LR - Sync via LrMobile, or by importing.

A key problem is that LR on Windows doesn't support H265 format videos, which is now the default for iOS. With Sync, they will arrive in your catalogue but with an error message. But LR on Windows won't let you import these files through File > Import.

On the iPhone, go into iOS Settings, Camera, Format, and change the format to Most Compatible - this makes all new videos H264 which Lightroom on Windows can read. For existing videos, there's an OpenSource app called Handbrake which will convert H265 to H264.

I'm also getting this error and want to add my support to have Lightroom support H265.  I've seen the workarounds for converting to H264 etc, but quite frankly in 2020 H265 is no longer a new video format.  How is this not a priority?

I never had a problem
importing and viewing video files, either MOV files from my Nikon D800, or MOV
files from my iPhone 6S. However, now I am running Lightroom Classic version
9.2.1, under macOS 10.13.6, I tried to add 64 MOV files I shot on my iPhone
that are already downloaded in a folder on my hard drive. Lightroom refused to
let me add any of them: “The movie files contain no video frames” I am not sure what that means, so I quit Lightroom,
then relaunched it, and tried to add a fewer MOV files- it let me import 5
only.

I tried again with a few
more, all shot on same day with same iPhone, but again, it refused to add any
of them. It is not consistent- it sometimes will add some, other times, it
won’t add any. I restarted the computer, but now, it is refusing to add any MOV
files shot with my iPhone.



I have been running the same
iOS on my phone, 11.14.1 for at least 6 months, likely longer, so I have not changed
anything there. Lastly, I just did a test video shot with my Nikon- Lightroom
let me import a MOV file from an SD card, so it seems like it is just the
iPhone videos it can’t deal with.
