I just upgraded Lightroom Classic from v 8.1.3 to 8.4.  It now hangs. I am on MacOS Mojave version 10.14.6. When reverting to v 8.1.3, Lightroom works fine. Are there compatibility issues with this version of Mojave? Thanks

hmm, could be a GPU issue... which mac and video card do you have?  Did you restart after the install?

This sounds like a bad install. Reverting to 8.3.1 likely cured the bad install.  You should attempt to reinstall again.

Clean Classic Install ProcedureClose Lightroom
Restart the computer
Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Lightroom Classic
Restart the computer
Install Lightroom Classic via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.
Restart the computer
Launch Lightroom
Wait 5 minutes

A Preference File will survive a Lightroom uninstall/reinstall. Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences.

Reset Procedure:1. Close Lightroom.
2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
4. Close Lightroom.
5. Restart Lightroom.
Does the behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

same thing here, I have almost the same set up as yours, but I am on a Macbook Pro 13 (2016) eGPU RX580. After hours of frustration, I just roll back to 8.31.
This is an extremely bad experience, since I have auto update on, I had no idea the culprit was the damn new version, took me several hours trying to fix the problem.... lost hours of work time....

Did the dialog appear and did you hit the [Reset Preferences] button? That isn't clear from your response.

Do you see any crash dialog from Mac or Adobe?

While Lightroom is in this state can you screenshot your Activity Monitor and post it here?

I haven't seen any crash dialog but I opened a ticket with Adobe.
Once I click on reset preferences, I get the swirly wheel and the activity monitor indicates that LR is not responding

Just found this thread after starting my own! (always the way)

I'm having the same issues and have gone back to 8.3.1 for now...

The add in I can give to the previous user (all the symptoms I'm seeing are the same) is that after about 30 minutes the memory used has gone to about 1.4GB.

A long shot, but if you create a new catalog while opening (hold down the Opt key while starting LR), does that work? No need to import photos (I just have a suspicion), just see if it opens ok in 8.4.

I've not managed to get it to launch while holding down the Opt  key, but it would launch from an empty catalogue.

I've gone back to 8.3.1 now so can't retest at the moment.

I've updated to v8.4, and the program hangs on start up.

I have spent over 10 working hours on the support chat lines to Adobe so far without resolution of the issue, rolling back to V8.3.1 has allowed me to open all my catalogues successfully.

Issue:

When opening an existing catalogue the program hangs and shows "program not responding" nothing else seems to happen.

Opening a new empty catalogue initially wouldn't work and Adobe support sent me off to Apple to resolve this, Apple deleted all the cache files and then it would open an empty catalogue OK and allow me to start with new photos.

However the existing and backup catalogues simply hang the program.

Catalogue has been sent to Adobe for "repair" it still wouldn't open the repaired file.

I spent over an hour with Adobe support chat taking control of my mac and tried twice to reinstall never fixed it. I don't think he tried alt/new catalog method but not sure. Never worked. I was using 8.3.1 but he recommended I go 8.3 so running that now. What a waste of time. Adobe needs to review their test base and make sure they are testing on enough scenarios so these bugs are not passed to paying consumers.

Just to rule out an issue with MacOS: It may be a corrupt cache or application state, or directory damage. Please give your Mac the "once over"! Run the free Onyx (https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/o...), reboot. (In Onyx just run almost everything in the Maintenance tab, deselecting things you may not want deleted, like Launch Services . Hit the "Options" button and deselect more stuff like Cookies & Other Site Data, Browser History, Form Values, etc.), then hit Run Tasks. After it's done it will ask for a reboot.

If that doesn’t fix it run Disk Warrior if you can ($120), (https://www.alsoft.com), reboot. If you can’t do Disk Warrior, at least run First Aid from Disk Utility. Also just doing a "Safe Boot" can clear out caches (restart, hold down shift until you see "Safe Boot" on the screen, then reboot normally.

If that doesn’t work try launching Lightroom from your other (admin or test) account, with a new catalog, as a test. Does it run OK? If it does it may be a corrupted preference in your Username/Library folder. Reset your preferences (https://www.lightroomqueen.com).

I've run Onyx and run disk first aid, unfortunately this has made no difference to V8.4.

I can open a new catalogue from the Option Key, but nothing else. Existing Catalogue and Backup catalogues do not open.

So no change, I went through a major support exercise with Apple as part of this and they couldn't find any OS issues, but did manually clear all the Lightroom caches.
