Error while creating Virtual Copies in Lightroom Classic on macOS Catalina

I am not able to create virtual copies. I didn't have any issues with this on my Mac prior to the Catalina update. I am now receiving an error "an internal error has occurred. ?:0: attempt to index field 'additionalDevelopMetadata' (a nil value)". Zero luck trouble shooting it. Any idea to try much appreciated!

Hi there,

We are sorry about the issue you are facing while trying to create virtual copies in Lightroom Classic.

Would you mind confirming the version of Lightroom Classic you are using by going to the Help menu > System info? You can try to add Lightroom Classic to the accessibility list for macOS by going to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > select the Privacy tab. Also grant permissions to Lightroom Classic under Files and Folders then restart the computer to check if that helps.

You can also try to reset the preferences of Lightroom Classic using the steps mentioned in the link below.

https://helpx.adobe.com/in/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

Note: Please takes a backup of your presets, plug-ins, etc. prior to resetting the preferences.

Regards,

Nikunj

I have the exact same issue with a specific folder. I also exported this specific folder as a single catalog to try it with my MacBook Pro. Same issue on Windows and my MacBook Pro. I can't even make a virtual copy out of one single picture. The same error occurs. I also tried resetting Lightroom on my MacBook Pro and Windows - no solution.

I don't why but I can't make virtual copies of it.

The bear in mind: I started working with this catalog on Windows, switched to my MacBook because I needed to work on it mobile. Than imported the catalog back into the Windows catalgo back, finished editing and then I tried to make virtual copies for black and white editing. This issue occured.

It may be telling when you post your System Infirmation. One area in particular are your plug-ins.

To test my understanding, you can export a single folder or even a single photo as a new catalog, and in that catalog, you still get the error when you try to make a virtual copy.

Please upload that small exported catalog (just the .lrcat file, no photos or ancillary files) to Dropbox or similar and post the sharing link here. That will help us narrow down the issue: Is it your installation(s) or all installations? Is it particular metadata?  Or is your catalog corrupted?  This will likely lead to a workaround to eliminate or avoid the error and an actionable bug report to Adobe.

I've got the same exact problem. I also work on two machines, both Windows 10. I also exported a collection from my desktop computer to work on those pictures on the go. I've done that multiple times without any issues, but know I'm unable to create virtual copies.

I ended up giving up unfortunately. Any new pictures that I imported I was able to create a virtual copy just fine. I took another really messy route to bring in two different copies from the ones that I was unable to. I did a bunch of rerouting of my catalog and had to mess a lot with remapping them. It's like I could make virtual copies of some older folders but some specific ones I couldn't and it wasn't worth the headache to figure out. Like I said, any new photos I import and creating virtual copies just fine so I'm moving forward. It seems to be related with it not registering the capability to do so on certain folders for whatever reason and I've tried to do ALL THE THINGS. I've come to terms that just something was wrong with the folder or import and leaving it at that. I even tried re-importing the same exact photos from my disk and same thing. So super weird.

I'm getting the same error after I combined a second catalogue into a main catalogue using the 'Import from another catalogue' function.

The error only happens with the images from the second catalogue that have been imported into the main catalogue. All other images in the main catalogue are fine. I still have the second catalogue and the virtual copy works correctly in that catalogue as well, so the issue does appear to be related to the import process. The reason for combining the two catalogues was to reduce the need to swap between the two.

I had already done quite a bit of work on the imported images before I came across the virtual copy error, so I now have a bunch of edited images in my main catalogue that won't allow VCs to be created, and a bunch of un-edited images in the old second catalogue that will allow VCs to be created!

"The error only happens with the images from the second catalogue that have been imported into the main catalogue."

I suggest you post a bug report in the official Adobe feedback forum, where Adobe wants all bug reports and feature suggestions: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/categories/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightroom . Be sure to include the first ten lines of the menu command Help > System Info.  Provide all the details, rather than linking back to this thread -- experience shows that Adobe developers tend not follow the links.

In addition, save copies of your main catalog's .lrcat file and the second catalog's .lrcat file (in the catalog folders), in case a developer asks for a copy of the corpse to do an autopsy.  Given that they should be able to reproduce the error easily enough, this bug has a chance of getting fixed.
