Lr closes on filmstrip use w/ AutoWrite XMP enabled (Thread is damaged-Contacting Forum Support)

Help!

Just tried version 13.0.2 today (12-3-23)… same problem ... LrC still crashes when scrolling through filmstrip in Develop Module.

(Note: I do initial filtering with “stars”. Not sure if related >> Crashing happens even unfiltered, but seems to happen more quickly when images are filtered)

 

History...

Early Oct, I upgraded to 13.0 = crash ... when scrolling through images in filmstrip

Oct 15, tried 13.0.1 = crash ... when scrolling through images in filmstrip in Develop Module.

Oct 29 and Nov 28 tries, same crash result with trying the “second install” and “waiting 5 min” after install.

 

From Oct 15 to today I have needed to revert back to version 12.5 = no issues, old LrC is solid and works fine.

I must use to 12.5 to be able to work.

The first thing that you should try is to switch off the GPU support from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps to fix the issue.

Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance tab > Uncheck "Use Graphics Processor" > Restart Lightroom.

Another step is to try to reset the Lightroom preferences.

The graphics card has the latest studio driver.

My system runs fast with zero issues using LrC 12.5.1.

I hesitate in making too many changes.

I watched a couple of YouTube videos on the topic of LR performance and found that my settings were pitiful compared to the amount of resources I have. So, I basically bumped everything up significantly: namely, Camera Raw Cache and Video Cache.

I've also turned off synching to all old collections in the cloud. Now, only the 3 most current ones are synched. The videos also suggested turning synching off if you aren't using it.  Now, LR sings!!! I can fly through the film strip, where as before, it would hang and crash. Maybe this will help.

We’ve reviewed the email address you use with this forum and find no crash reports in our system.

 

Did you see a crash dialog?

Do you use a different email address when filling out the crash report?

Was the crash dialog Adobe’s? Microsoft’s?

Thanks for your reply.

The were NO crash dialogs at all from Adobe or Microsoft, with crashes (while scrolling through develop/filmstrip images) in version 13.0, 13.0.1 or 13.0.2.   LrC will freeze for about 2-3 seconds and then crash.

My current/active email is the same as in my Adobe Creative Cloud account.

Do I need to do something more?

Here is the video ...

It took 6+ min of running to crash LrC 13.0.2, for this video. I did some rapid scrolling to so we wouldn't need to wait longer. Even with slower scrolling it WILL eventually crash.

I do not see a crash. I see an Application Hang and do not see what happened after. This video is not much help in identifying. What did you do after the video stopped to restore your system?

I was using win + G to do a "screen capture video" of LrC.
Where the video stops, is the actual “crash”. LrC just goes away. Windows and any other running applications are not affected.
When scrolling the filmstrip in develop module, LrC froze for about 2 seconds and crashed/shutdown.

 

If it would help, I can do a camera/phone video and make keystrokes visible.
Any suggestions are welcomed.

This sounds like something crashing on the OS level from your provided description. I would recommend pursuing the Microsoft Logs for further clues.

Thanks again for your advice. There were no LrC or Win crash dialogs. 

Any thoughts on where windows 10 is more heavily taxed with versions 13xx over 12.5.1?

LrC 12.5.1 runs very well on my PC ... zero issues.

LrC 13, 13.0.1 & 13.0.2 all crash.

It looks like I missed this question. No, NOT solved.

When LrC (all versions 13.xx) crashes, I can restart it and edit a few photos until the next crash ... always happens when scrolling filmstrip in Develop module. Crash typically happens within 5 to 15 minutes when working in Develop module.

Thanks for the info. Please accept my apology.
In reading through the comments, I didn't notice that I accidentally clicked on "Correct Answer" button.

With all LrC versions 13.xx (including the latest 13.1.0.8), the crashing issue remains unchanged.
So far, all LrC versions 13.xx are not usable on my system ... there are just too many crashes.
I do have Event Viewer data from the crash, but not sure what I should do with the info ...

( Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic\Lightroom.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll ).

LrC version 12.5 and all other applications run just fine with no crashes or issues, on my system.

Thinking about file paths on Windows PC's. This is not a MACOS issue. And this may not be your issue, but..

 

When you consider the files that are the previews, the file path may be getting a bit long. Now when you upgrade a catalog, especially in the past, all those extra number 2's get included, making no sense and increasing file name lengths. This can be simplified/changed at upgrade, or you can change it later.

 

Now, probably not the issue, but... If you cut down on the catalog file name and folder name, does LrC then behave?

 

Change:

Library Path: C:\Users\Jeff\Desktop\Lightroom catalog\Lightroom Catalog-2-2- 21-04-27\Lightroom Catalog-2-2- 21-04-27-v13.lrcat

to something more like:

Library Path: C:\Users\Jeff\Desktop\Lightroom Catalog\Lightroom Catalog 21-04-27-v13

 

Now I have no idea what the 21-04-27 refers to, a date? So included in example above.

I did shorten the path. As expected, 13.0.2 still crashes.

I'll also shorten the path for 12.5.1 and uninstall 13.0.1 ... so I can get some work done 😉

Not sure if anyone recommend looking at your Windows Event Viewer for issues. So, I will.

 

Use the Windows Event Viewer to look for issues, maybe a Critical Event, but more likely a Error Event.

 

I would  recommend you let the computer run for a bit more than an hour before using the Event Viewer, and in fact do not run LrC until that hour is up. You can leverage that hour to your advantage while looking through the Event Viewer as you can just look at events in the last hour. After the hour (or more)  run LrC, get the Crash, and look in the Event Viewer for events in the last hour.

I need to get through some work, in the next few days/week ... and will need to use reliable 12.5.1 to avoid delays.

After that, I'll reinstall 13.0.2 and see if something can be learned from the event viewer.

I wonder if GoldingD or Rikk Flohr: Photography or someone else can make sense of the data you provided.

What are you doing when your LR crashes? For me, LrC 13.0.2 crashes when scrolling in develop module.

 

I'll need to wait for a smaller job, before I am willing to reinstall 13.0.2 and check the event viewer. Dealing with 5 to 10 crashes on a small job is easier than dealing with 100 crashes on a large job.

I'll stay with 12.5.1 for now.

Microsoft has articles on resolving ntdll.dll crashes. It normally resolves to permissions or potentially a corrupt user account. In any case, it looks like this is more OS-related than Application-related.
