With the new update, when using  Select Sky or Select Subject, i get an unexpected error message saying something went wrong and the request could not be completed.

Thanks for your detailed description. The log files that you attached earlier indicated that the GPU driver run into some difficulties and decided to detach itself (see the error logging below, it also matches your description that the GPU acceleration was turned off in Lr preferences after encountering the error).

Me too. Based on this forum, it is a common bug. I guess we'll just have to sit tight and wait for a fix by Adobe. FWIW, I opened a case on my issue. I uploaded a video capture of what I was doing to produce the error, which, in all honestly, won't be of much help to them.

The problem isn't happening to everyone across the board.  To significantly accelerate Adobe's troubleshooting:

 

1. The problem might be specific to the JPEGs you're trying, e.g. adjustments you've applied in the past, particular cameras, etc. Upload a problem JPEG to Google Drive or similar and post the sharing link here. If the problem happens on other LR configurations, that indicates the problem is with the photo; otherwise the problem is particular to your configuration.

 

2. Select Subject and Select Sky use "AI" (machine learning), and such image AI models often use the graphics processor (GPU) to speed their execution.  The Help > System Info output you both posted shows you have very old Intel HD Graphics drivers:

 

DirectX: Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 (21.20.16.4526) -- this is from 2016.

DirectX: Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 (21.20.16.4727) -- this is from 2017.

 

a. Try setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off.

 

b. Do a clean uninstall/update of the latest graphics driver by going directly to Intel's web site. See here for details on how to do that correctly:

I have the same problem and did all that to no avail, still not working.  I contacted Adobe and they tried helping and i was told it was my graphics that  was too old and to update/renew it.  Seems only way I can be sure is to renew my computer.  My Graphics driver/card is Intel(R)HD Graphics 520 .  Seems like this is a commoin problem 😞

@Duncan21853034172q, Adobe support is hit or miss (more miss than hit). Others here have reported that updating drivers for the 520 has solved the issue. Please do the menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the contents here, and we can verify which version of Windows and driver you have and point you at resources for updating the driver.

To use or not to use the GPU for ML inference for a particular GPU/driver version is not within Lr's control. The platform OS will do the check at runtime. So turn off the Lr graphics processor option in the Lightroom user preference would not have any effect either way.

This won't help. In general, please follow https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4 to update your system with the latest GPU drivers from the respective vendor.

I resolved my issue by upgrading the intel HD Graphics 530 driver.  I have a Asus Z170 premium motherboard with a Intel 6th gen skylake processor.  It was using a driver downgrade from Asus (22.20.16.4691) (recomended on their web site).   I am using windows 10 pro.  I used the device manager to select & upgrade the 530 driver automatically.  It installed 27.20.100.8682.   Not very good with windows 10 or Lightroom/Photoshop but seems to be working now...And yes I like it!  Hopefully no other issues.  Just sharing the info to possibly help others with the same problem.

This solved it for me! My HP laptop wanted to use its HP drivers from years ago. I followed the links above, slogged through the update and now the new features work -- if slowly. New laptop with better graphics card in my future, if not in my budget.

My problem is that I have an Acer Desktop computer and Intel says that Acer has modified their drivers and I must go to Acer to get the latest Intel driver modified by Acer. But the only driver Acer has is the on that I'm now using from 2016..

@ALagrange , just to remove ambiguity (since the forum doesn't show who's replying to who), your System Info shows your driver version as:

DirectX: Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 (22.20.16.4735)

That driver is from 2017.  Try again to do a clean uninstall/update following the directions here:

Downloaded the new version of Lightroom and Lightroom Classic today but having trouble with the new Masking tool. Select Sky and Select Subject are not working. I get an error message that states: SOMETHING WENT WRONG -  There was an unexpected error and your request could not be completed.

 

Anybody else having this issue? Funny thing is that it works on my iPad with Lightroom but does not work on my desktop in either LR or LR Classic.

I am also having a problem with the masking, but a little bit different problem.  When I use Select Subject, it makes a decision on what to select, and if I click Add or Subtract, and choose Brush, the brush does nothing.  A line shows up in the mask dialog, and has New Brush with the common caution sign, a triangle with an exclamation point on it.  Cannot add to or subtract from the subject.  This is on my desktop.
