P: Alt+drag layer mask - Copies but layer icon does not update

To copy a layer mask to another layer in the layer panel i use the method: ALT+drag to the new layer mask icon in the layer panel.

In Photoshop 24.6 the mask is copied and takes effect - but the icon does not update. I have to click on the eye icon of the new layer Layermask icon.... only then the correct display is updated.

Of course I have tried the usual measures:

Complete uninstall (with preferences)
Reinstall Photoshop
Deactivating GPU in preferences and using GPU better acceleration without OpenCL.

Nothing helps

Then I noticed that everything works correctly in PS 23.5.5. But in all 24 versions I have the described error. So the cause must be a bug in PS 24.x. Or did I miss something?

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Thank you for the sysinfo @arwen morgenstern testing here and the workflow you posted is working as expected.

Go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and enable “Older GPU mode (pre 2016)” - Restart Photoshop. Does the problem persist?

At this point it is hard to say why it is happening to your system. Until we or someone else can replicate this over and over there is no way to see where this issue for you is.

As a further attempt, I installed an older graphics card driver... No effect.

Then, for the third time, I completely uninstalled PS (following the instructions on the Adobe homepage) and installed the older 24 versions of Photoshop one after the other. My finding:
24.1 works
24.2 works
24.3 works
24.4.1 works
24.5 works
and last:
24.6 is not working 😞

I have no idea what is different now in the course of many installation processes. Before all 24 versions did not work. At least I can now work with ver 24.5.
But: Come on Adobe! This must be a bug in 24.6!

I have since contacted Adobe support again. A friendly employee from India got on my computer and went through some processes with me. The result: The employee has determined to me that it is a bug. He promised to enter the problem into the Adobe internal bug tracker. A solution would be available in the next update.

Unfortunately, nothing came of this promise again:
Today the PS Major Update to 25.0 arrived.
I installed it immediately. But unfortunately nothing has changed. Shame on Adobe :-(. I am really disappointed.

I also had contact with Adobe support. The employee got on my PC and confirmed the bug. Since then there have been 2 new PS updates. Unfortunately the bug is still there 😞

Having this bug too on Mac (Ventura, Studio M1 Max). The icon updates to the current representation of the mask after a few more edits but it is never correct at the outset.

I've noticed this bug for the last few updates as well. ALT+Drag (copying) a mask does not update immediately. Toggling the layer ON/OFF will trigger the mask thumbnail to update. FYI, simply dragging (moving) the mask from one layer to the other WITHOUT holding the ALT key updates right away.

Every new updates brings usually more problems than it resolves unfortunately. I'm havind the same issue and I don't seem to be learning from that mistake. I'm rolling back a couple of versions until all the new annoying bugs have been removed.

I'm having the same issue, it's extremely annoying. For me, if I drag the Layer Mask twice, and on the second time the layer mask updates propperly, don't know if that helps someone. But Adobe really has to improve these last versions! Since 24 versions, I've had to endure all kind of bugs, checking on Adobe community for hacks like "Deactivate Native Canvas", "Older GPU mode (pre 2016)", etc. to make Photoshop work properly. Writing the damn PSConfig text file to have Pen Pressure on Windows since forever. One should not have to go through all these stuff to make a program work propperly Adobe!

I would never have thought of that... Super tipp, so I can work at least to some extent in the current version :-). Thanks a lot for that!
Of course this is not a final solution. I'm really surprised that Adobe doesn't seem to recognize the problem. And also that more users don't come forward with this problem.

How I go about it right now is I invert the mask twice. Then it will update as well. But it is a hassle and I have to remember to do it and big mistakes can easily occur. I'm working for big publications and I can't afford to have a faulty mask in my files.

Really pleading for a fast fix for this.

Crazy. How does this bug still exist? You have to drag the mask twice or toggle the layer visibility to update the thumbnail. Surely that's not a hard bug to fix. For something a lot of people run into multiple times a day, I would think this would have been fixed long ago.
