P: Artifacts/incorrect appearance after flattening (macOS Catalina)

I keep having an issue with white boxes obscuring portions of my files when I am zooming in and out or saving the image. It happens when I try to flatten the image, save as a PDF, or save as a JPG. Prior to updating to version 22, I had found a workaround to the issue by using the Legacy Compositing checkbox. However in this version, that option is no longer available and I cannot find any way to stop the boxes now. I am running on a Macmini using macOS Catalina. Someone please help!

I'm sorry to here about the issue.  Would you mind sharing your PSD file?  My team and I removed the Legacy Compositing checkbox because we thought after 2 years, we had worked all of the bugs and kinks.  I'm sorry again for the troubles.

I emailed you a temporary solution, as I do not want to publicize this to the masses.

I have begun to notice an issue with files at our company surrounding layered files with masks.

These files look and appear fine when saved as a PSD file, but whenever these files are saved as JPGs for input into InDesign or simply flattened, the representation of masked layers produces errors.

Often these errors look like random squares where the mask fails to mask the layer.

Can you post a source PSD and resulting JPEG that produces this issue? (CC Files or Dropbox)

When you save the JPEG, what method are you using? Save As, Export As, or Save for Web?

I have a gradient overlay (Red to blue) on a fill pattern, when I go to export it shows the fill pattern as Solid blue

See images attached — I have a vector masking shape layer (made by pasting in a path from Illustrator) over an image layer. I then flatten / save out — and get these weird additional 'blocks' appearing... this has been tested on several images I am working on today... Seems the new PS 22.01 has trouble interpreting the vector shape...

I have the same issue with flattening files with vector masks. Catalina, MacBook Pro 16", Photoshop CC 2021. I have to rasterize the vector mask to get it to work right.

Exporting a layered PSD to JPG results in some strange overlaid box appearing.

(Currently using Photoshop 22.1.0 on macOS Big Sur)

Recently came across this issue.  When using export as, my layers using a layer mask and gradient fades didn't merge properly, and my gradient fades went away leaving me with this...

I can confirm that disabling the layers with the layer masks removes the offense, and that manually merging the layers into a single layer with all the others results in this exact same result as well, irregardless of using the export as and quick save features.  So it seems it's the merging of the layers with the layer masks with the rest of the layers that is causing the problem.

I did find a workaround to this problem however, by simply using the "Save as" command instead.  Likewise I tested the "Save for Web" option and that worked as well.  This is how it is supposed to look like:

The problem is found on both of my 2 computers:

2019 iMac 21.5 inch with Radion Pro 555X 2 GB graphics

2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB.

Both machines are running macOS Catalina 10.15.7, and running Photoshop version 22.1.0

Thanks for reporting this issue. This issue was fixed in 22.1.1 which released late last night.

I'm having the same problem. I have created a photostacked image from 30 images, and edited. When I flatten or save as a TIFF or Jpeg there are artefacts that show from one or two of the original images used in the photo stack. I have restarted PS, restarted computer, deleted PS preferences but this has made no difference.

I'm running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7

Can you offer any advise/help. Thanks

Hi Andrew, thanks for your reply and I have responded to your email. As I have mentioned above, I was able to resolve the issue with a simple software update (should have tried this initially, though I thought I was using the latest version).

Hi Andrew, wanted to add to the issue with my file...I have an InDesign file that has two placed .PSD files on separate layers–the sky behind the buildings. I've flattened each .PSD file with a transparent background to see if I can get rid of the issue. The photoshop files look fine. But upon export to PDF using Press Quality / Standard: PDF/X:1a-2001 and Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) and the PDF has faint white lines/artifacts in a couple different spots. I resolved it by exporting to Press Quality / PDF 5 with NONE as the Standard but my printer wants the PDF/Z:1a-2001. Here's the PDF with the issue inside the red boxes. Thank you!
