P: Crash on using Select Subject or Object Selection Tool on Windows

Just got the new update for Photoshop v23.0. I cannot use the object seletion tool anymore without Photoshop crashing after a few steps.

Here is an update on the computer situation. I took the computer into the store where I had it custom built. The diagnostics showed that the MSI Afterburner over clocked the Nividia 1080 TI Geforce to the max. When the graphics card asked for more to ativate the tool, the computer rebooted. The card was reset to default. The computer went into reboot again. The power supply came over from my former case (550w). With the new motherboard, fans, and graphics card, it wasn't enough to keep up. A new power supply (750) was dropped in, stress tested and it works perfectly. So, now you have a couople of other places to consider why the system reboots. Now it is time to go play. 🙂

Donc si je comprend bien, tous les pc sont devenus obsolete avec la version actuelle de photoshop 🙄 N'ayant pas été prévenu d'avoir un pc dernier cri avec MSI et tout vos trucs ... Je vais résilier mon abonnement et je n'en ferrai pas la pub. Ou vous faites en sorte que ca marche car ce que je dois décocher ne sont pas accessible. C'est surement du à ma carte graphique obsolete.

I have just tried again with version 23.1 after no success with 23.0 and 23.0.1.  Sadly still the same - PS opens normally and stable until I select the object selection tool.  There are no reports I can forward as the computer (W11 NVidia 1080) goes straight into a reboot a few seconds after the tool is selected.  Everything is stable in all other programs and there are no issues running PS 22.5.4 or LR using the object selection tools.  There must be a bug in the PS software and I will have to stay with PS 22.5.4 longer term it seems.  Frustrating as I don't want corruptions coming from these reboots with repeated attempts with new versions .

@scottm28807177 A system crash usually means a low level failure such as a driver (bad video card driver, etc), failing hardware (hard disk, video card, etc.) or damaged OS installation.

Try disabling the in-game overlay on GeForce experience. This seems to be the culprit for some customers - https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/entire-system-is-freezing-when-i-use-...

Thanks Geoffrey but I have already turned this overlay off.  There seems to be nothing I can do as I have tried a range of solutions.  I too suspect the interaction with the NVidia driver but have in the past tried a range of things such as removing the NVidia Studio Driver & trying the regular driver - all to no avail.  I repeat that it is only PS v23... software that does this.  Topaz suite, Lightroom etc etc are completely stable.  I have also in the past trying to disable using the Nvidia Graphics processor in PS Settings with no success!

I am having this same issue and I can tell you that it is beyond frustrating. Why have this new tool if it crashes Photoshop everytime I try and use it? I've upgraded my computer so that there's a ton of ram to use and this still happens. Any ideas?

Am I the only one having an issue? I don't see any others reporting this...

My Win 11, with PS 23.1.1 still crashes when I use Object Selection Tool as of 2/5/22.  I can use it initially as though all was working, but as soon as you turn off the selection, or try to copy and past the selection to a new layer, PS just shuts off.  No Crash reporting, and all history of files worked on for that period of time from reboot to crash are lost.  Support on this has been HARD to find and to REPORT.  I have 16 Gb Ram, 12 Gig of free scratch space and a Nividia 1080

Thanks Ravenwolf13.  I was beginning to wonder if no one else was the same as me as it has been quiet for a while.  I note you too are using a NVidia 1080 card like me.  I am convinced there is some sort of conflict going on between the software and the NVidia driver/Card.  Frustrating, but it looks like I still have to sit on 22.5.5 software until this is worked out.

ASUS RTX3080 TUF GAMING 10GB (with stock default asus profile), windows 11 pro 21H2, photoshop 23.3 as of 20feb 2022.

Tonight while I was working, unlike all the previous cases, the crash report window appeared! I hope they can tell us something.

An addition.
I think it is a big problem between nvidia driver and photoshop.
Removing the hw acceleration via gpu there are no problems, while activating openCL / GPU hw rendering the program crashes even selecting other tools.

Typically the error that is traced in the windows event log is the following (heap corruption):

yep sorry I made a typo, I have 23.2 

yesterday I also added more details about the errors but someone deleted the post.

in summary: the problem is with the acceleration of the gpu. without it there are no problems.

in general, crashes also happen with other tools.

the error is always related to heap corruption when Ps invokes windows functions (ntdll). 

the Nvidia drivers are also the latest available.

I just want to share some other info.

The time I managed to send the crash report (the only one to tell the truth, all the other times the program closed impractically) the windows event log had not tracked anything, while in all other cases (not only with the "object selection", also with other tools), in the windows event viewer I always found the reference to ntdll.dll with error code 0xc0000374 (corrupt heap memory). Below is an example of logs -one among many:

Thanks also.  I again tried after upgrading to 23.2 and same issue remains - crashing as soon as the object selection tool is select so switched back to 22.5.6 and all good again.  I have the same problem not relsolved by any of the 23. versions & also have Nvidia 1080 the Nvidia drivers are also the latest.  Everything else on my system is completely stable so your help will be much appreciated.
