P: Crash on using Select Subject or Object Selection Tool on Windows

Just got the new update for Photoshop v23.0. I cannot use the object seletion tool anymore without Photoshop crashing after a few steps.

Photoshop on version 24.0 is crashing again when using the object selection tool. I don't get how many times this issue has to come up for it to stop being a problem. So much for the "extensive improvements on the object selection tool" thank you adobe.

Now it crashes when I use the plain old "quick selection tool." Cannot even select and mask anymore. I had to downgrade the dpi to 150 from 300 and that helped, but I just do not dare use that tool anymore. I got Black Screen of Death and corrupted system files which had to be fixed on microsoft's end. I know I only have 8 gb of ram but it used to be pretty decent.

I am getting exact same problem when using select tool. No problem with 2022 ver but 2023 vers24.01 is black screen crash. Please help ASAP

After struggling with this problem for months, including removing a bunch of peripherals, installing new RAM and hard drive, and trying various versions of PS going back to the 2021 versions, I finally told my IT guy to build me a whole new system. After telling him exactly what was happening, and when, he told me to hold off and try one thing before I went to that extreme. The next day, he showed up with a new power supply. I thought that was absurd, because IME, when a power supply fails, it's DEAD. But I went with it and installed it. No further problems. He said (and this was from research specific to the motherboard that I have) that the higher demands of wattage from Photoshop may have just been causing it to give up and shut down. When I removed my backup hard drive and several USB peripherals, the shutdowns became less frequent, and that was what prompted him to look into the power supply issues. I waited a week and installed the latest Photoshop, and it works perfectly. 

YMMV, but it's a cheap possible solution.

Thank you. All of crashing started happening when I went from 2022 to 2023. I was able to find 2022 with some internet research. Not easy to find. Why can't adobe at least please keep last major version easy to download and assessable. Anyways once I went back to 2022 I have not any problems. I REALLY miss the "delete and fill"  button that is new in 2023. Hopefully there will be a fix SOON.

May I ask what Graphics Card and CPU you have?
What Power Supply did you have, and what you went up to?
I have an RTX2070 and a 650W PSU, with an i7-9700k CPU.

NOTE: The PSU or Hardware may be the problem - as the issue also happens with Luminar Neo/AI when doing similar functions, such as selecting/replacing the SKY.

Updating the NVIDA Drivers does NOT fix the issue, as I update regularly.

Question that needs to be answered: Why does the operation work in V22.5.8 (which is what I have kept to do such operations) and yet does NOT Work in Versions above this (V23+) ?

You can go into Creative Cloud and roll back to any old version you want with a couple of clicks. And you can have multiple versions installed at once if you want to experiment.

Rolling back the version didn't fix the problem for me, although with the older version, it didn't happen every time I clicked the select tools, but much more random. The computer is at my office, so I can't give you the exact specs (search through this thread...I think I pasted the dxdiag file which may have more info). But I built the system 4 years ago with the highest-end i7 that was available at the time. The graphics is onboard Intel, so Nvidia wasn't part of the equation for me. 

But my i9 laptop with Nvidia graphics had absolutely no problem with any version of Photoshop.

Some things that people who are experiencing this problem can try.

(Change the options and restart Photoshop.)
1. Go to Preference - Image Processing - Change to "More Stable(CPUmode)

2. Go to Preference - Technologhy Previews - Turn on "Older GPU mode(2016)"

3. Go to Preference - Technologhy Previews - Turn on "Deactive Native Canvas"

As far as I know, it should be solved by changing the 1. Selection mode.

I spoke to a friend who was a PC Engineer, 1st thing he said was it sounds like a Power Supply Issue, I see that somebody in this forum fixed the issue by upgrading their PSU, so I went and bought a 750W (Recommended PSU for my RTX2070 Super is a 550W, I had a 650W). Put the 750W in and SAME ISSUE. I then swapped my RAM around - even though the modules are identical - SAME Issue, I then REPLACED my Video Card with an RTX 3070 - the issue got worse in that the PC rebooted as soon as I selected the SELECT OBJECT Tool, previously the PC would only reboot when I actually went to use the Select Object Tool.

I have Updated the drivers, switched between Studio and Game drivers and back again, tried changing the Preferences as per another post/reply.

NOTHING WORKS. I have to revert back to 22.5.8 To do any any work selecting Objects, as well as some other features, such as Select Sky and forget about using some of the NEW features like

Why am I paying a subscription for Updated software that constantly crashes my PC, so I am only able to use part of the software?

I have had a subscription for over 5 years, but now at the point where I am seriously reconsidering continuing the subscription as I am not getting what I paid for, and that is getting updated software that works.

Man I feel you! It looks better with the latest update. Looks like it was DirectML.dll that was causing the crash. I'm also on a 2070 Super and on an 850W PSU, no issues so far although the tool performs way faster on a MacOS.

@matthewe47530596 Did you try this? (i.e. disable Intel Turbo Boost in BiOS). Your MB, BIOS, etc may be different and may not be an option for you. I posted this fix quite awhile back and considered it a 'temporary' fix until Adobe addressed the issue. New PS version recently seemed to take care of it.

I'm having the same system crash issue when trying to use the Object Selection Tool using 23.2.2 or any 23.2.x versions. Computer immediately reboots itself.  I downgraded to PhotoShop 22.5.1 and the problem no longer exists. I've reviewed many posts from others having the same problem. Seems to be diverse set of equipment specs with no real consistent component among everyone except a Intel CPU. I was using the onboard Intel UHD graphics. Then, thinking that was problem upgraded to a MSI-nVidia 4gb card but still had the same issue.   TEMPORARY FIX: Disabling Intel Turbo Boost Technology in BIOS fixed the problem in PhotoShop v23.2.x   My hardware; Motherboard - ASRock B365M Pro4 (BIOS v4.50 8_17_2021) 16GB Ram Intel i7-9700k @ 3.6GHz (not overclocked) MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB (driver v30.0.15.1179) Windows 10 Home 19044.1586

Im suffering similar issue, seems to happen when I utry to define the area for object selection to select with lasso or retangle option. I completely removed Nvidia driver using DDU and reinstalled the Nvidia driver, made no differance.

Hi, just wanted to say I'm on Photoshop 24.1.1 and have a 3090 on the latest drivers and the selection tool and after using the Object Selection Tool, Photoshop just exits. Reproducible every time. PC remains stable. No crash reporter is shown. I've followed the "open command prompt, paste this, say yes" instructions but still not getting a crash error reporter. I'm stumped! Any suggestions please?

@CoryShubert  Hi Cory, thanks for the advice, but unfortunately the object selection tool is still crashing even on these drivers. I can use the tool successfully, but a short while later PS just locks up and exits.

If anything it's doing it more consistently. The tool works when I select something, but as soon as I copy the selection and paste it into a different document, it starts stuttering and then just exits. I briefly had the crash report box coming up before but it's stopped again now. Is there any info I can provide to try and help? Thanks.

A couple things to try: update to the newest Ps, 24.2, does this still happen?

or:

Go to Preferences > Technology Previews... and enable “Older GPU mode (pre 2016)” - Restart Photoshop. Does the problem persist?

I tried absolutely everything, however, I came across a post to change a setting in the BIOS, and this appeared to fix the issue.
I have kept an Old Version of Photoshop just in case, but also have a copy of the Latest Photoshop which I regularly update, and had no issues for about 4 months.

@CoryShubert Thanks Cory.... touch wood the object selection tool doesn't appear to be crashing any more on the latest version... however... now none of the fly-out menus below the eraser tool on the toolbar are working, so I've lost lots of functionality! I'm talking about the ones where you click and hold... like over the three dots to access the paint bucket and line tool etc, as well as the sub-selections for the pen and text tools! Any ideas?! Should I start a new thread? Cheers!

If I expand it into two columns of tools, it works. It's only when the toolbar is one column the bottom sub menus won't appear. 

I've been using the object selection tool extensively this afternoon without problem, so thank you for that!
