My question is how do I add a transparent overlay behind person/subject on photo in Photoshop?  I have tried many ways and it's not quite working for me. Any help would be greatly apprecaited. Thank you all in advanced!

Your subject needs to be on a layer (not the background) where you can mask out/remove the background. 

Heres some instruction on selecting subjects:
