Photoshop August 2021 update

Let's talk about what's new! With the August release of Photoshop, we added more sky images to Sky Replacement, improved Transform Warp, and added other customer requested changes. Recent additions to Photoshop on iPad include the long awaited Healing Brush and Magic Wand as well as a cool new feature that allows you to display your canvas on an external monitor.  Besides enhancements, we fixed a number of things to improve performance and more. For detailed information, see Fixed issues in Photoshop.

You also may have noticed some changes in the Photoshop community. We recently consolidated the Photoshop & Photoshop Mobile communities into one community called, “Photoshop ecosystem” and added labels for you to choose what platform your posting relates to. For more information regarding this change, view this announcement

ACP Highlight

Trevor Dennis.jpgTrevor Dennis - Other than working on my dad’s farm, I spent my working life at Ford UK’s Research & Engineering site starting as a toolmaker, but most of my time there was on a small design team producing specialist test instrumentation.  Over the years I have raced motorcycles on dirt and track, climbed a lot of mountains and a good few rock faces, and walked mostof New Zealand’s Great Walks. I did the UK Coast to Coast - 200 miles across the Lakes District peaks and North Yorkshire Moors - in ten days. I’ve always had a keen interest in computers, starting with a BBC Micro (serial # 00050), Amiga 1000, and finally a Windows PC so I could get onto the Internet - which in those days meant Usenet and bulletin boards.  I discovered Photoshop when it first became available for Windows, but I had mixed feelings back then having come from Deluxe Paint on the Amiga 1000. I have none the less been obsessed with Photoshop ever since. I also owned Premiere Pro and InDesign, which I used to produce my Camera Club’s newsletter. I was lucky to have a job that I loved, but still pleased to get early retirement in 2004 and move to the Marlborough region of New Zealand, surrounded by endless miles of grape vines. I’ve worked as a commercial photographer and run Photoshop workshops at three PSNZ (Photographic Society of New Zealand) National Conventions. I have a theory that content creators tend towards being OCD, and that we never do anything except to excess. So, my current obsession is woodworking which I discovered after joining my local Menz Shed, primarily for its well-equipped metal shop. I recently built a router cabinet from scratch, making everything other than the casters, switch, and router. I've made some great friends from the Adobe forums, and have never stopped learning new things. The new warp options are very welcome.  It's something I have specifically hoped to see for many years.

Something I don't think the updated help page shows is that we can Shift click or drag to combine Split Warp points, which are indicated by a surrounding rectangle

You can then affect combined Split Warp points relative to the layer or object.

AFAICT we now have what people have been asking for with Sky Replacement.  I think the complaint was that we could not append a folder of our own new skies.  Well we can definitely do that now, although I can't say that I tested it before V22.5  I could not see any way O importing a folder, but it is easy enough to create a new Sky Group, select it, and append multiple new skies in a single operation.  That's pretty cool.  We have interesting skies here sometimes, but I have to drive to be able to view the horizon to record a BIG sky, so was thinking I'd just put up my drone to capture the next nice sky.

It's also good to see improvements to Discover.  I strongly believe that Photoshop's various search tools are underutilized.  How many threads have asked where to find such and such a Photoshop tool, when the poster only needed to type it's name — or part there of — into Discover to reveal its location.  It's much the same with brush presets, but the Photoshop Development team are missing a trick with the brush panel search bar because, while it is definitely useful to filter all the presets that contain a word like 'hair' from massive groups like Kyle Webster's Megapack, if you try to refine the search the slightest bit, it finds nothing!  It would also be wonderful to have an option to include all the preset groups not appended to the main brush preset panel.

It's the same thing with Patterns, Gradients, Styles, and Shapes with the latter being most relevant in my case, as we seem to have an awful lot of shapes nowadays, and they are not as weasy to find as they used to be.  I was finding it a pain to find Speech bubbles for Dave's SFTW uploads, until the search bar came to the rescue, but wouldn't it be wonderful if we had Fuzzy Search capability, and I didn't have to reemember to refer to 'speech' bubbles as 'talk' bubbles?

[EDIT]  I love Sky Replacement, but sometimes I use it just to obtain the incredible mask it produces.  If I want to apply an effect to the existing sky, for instance.

I like Photoshop a lot and I use it daily but the 22.5.0 update is a fail and there is an important regression with macOS Catalina 10.15.7

I posted all the details in a blog post accessible here : https://www.itakephotos.fr/photoshop-22-5-0-failed-update-with-macos-catalina-10-15-7/
