Set the order to 'album order'
Then you can highlight, then drag and drop the files where you want in the browsing space.

It didn't Work album order rearranged my photos in the album when I clicked on it
It would take days to rearrange the 300 photos back into a sequential date order like oldest
just want to move 20 or so photos
now I just relate the photos to get them in the right place. Headache

Marlene,
That proves that you can access the album sort order.
Your problem is that you don't want to sort all photos manually.
Do you mean that you would be happy to start with the 'oldest' choice, then only move around 20 or so,
Then, create a new empty album.
In the present one, set the order to 'oldest'.
Select all.
Drag all photos to the new album (or drag the new album over the selected photos).
The new album will inherit the 'oldest' order as the custom order, so:
set the order to 'custom',
and move around your 20 pictures.
When all is done, you can delete the old album, that won't delete any picture, only the album, which is only a sorted list of files like an audio playlist. Deleting the list does not delete the files it references.

I am having the same problem. I downloaded a Win10 photo file that was in numerical sequence (001 002 003, etc.) and the Organizer rearranged them. I can look at the album but when I open the Sort By: menu, I do not see Album Order on the drop-down menu. I see only Newest Oldest Name Import Batch.

I struggled with figuring out how to drag and drop and discovered I had to position the hand precisely over the number that is in the upper left corner of the picture. If I don't have it positioned correctly it does not change the hand into a "grip", and will not drag and drop.

Are you on Mac or Windows? Which version?
I have no problem with my Win 10. Once the file(s) to move have been selected (highlighted with a surrounding darker grey frame), I only have to click and hold on any part of the image to move them.
