I give up. I am trying to use layer styles, specifically to put an outline around an image. While I find some of them do what I want (such as bevels) I find others cover my image and some do not show up at all. What am I missing? I am using PE2018

There is another way to put an outline (stroke) around an image. Try this:
Open the image in Editor (Expert tab)
Change the foreground color chip to the desired color with the color picker, e.g. red.
Go to Select menu>all. You should see an outline ("marching ants"} surrounding the image
Open a blank layer above the Background layer
Go to Edit menu>Stroke (outline) selection. In the dialog that opens make the width 6px and position the stroke inside,
If the width of the stroke is not suitable, adjust to suit. Since the stroke is on its own layer, you can delete the layer and replace with another blank layer
Press CTRL+D to get rid of the marching ants

Have a look at this video, Sparkle covering how to outline images in Styles.

I am simply having a hard time figuring out what Layer Styles are all about. Some I can use to outline my image but others simply cover up the image and the Layer Style/Style Settings does nothing to change that situation. So how are they supposed to be used?
