When I try to backup Elements 12, the software locks up.  If I can't back up the catalog and pictures, I am afraid to even try to upgrade.  I have one catalog and I library of pictures is 145 GB.

What exactly are you backing up to where -- and how?

How much free, clean, defragmented space is left on your computer's hard drive and how much space is on the drive you are backing up to?

Well, my intent is to back up to an external hard drive that is empty.  However, as soon as I click on "backup", it locks up.  I have 314 GB of used space and 150 GB of unused space.  I have even taken my computer in to check for viruses, etc and general cleanup in case that was causing the problem.

I'm still not sure what steps you're taking to backing up. I assume you're using the feature in the Organizer and that you're working over a USB connection to a conventional hard drive. Which, based on what you've told me, is empty -- but I still don't know how large it is.

But based on those assumptions, I'm still not sure why you're having problems.

Step 1: Open Photoshop elements 12

Step 2: Click on File

Step 3: Click on Backup Catalog

system churns and churns and never responds

I never reach the stage of selecting where I want to back up. The hard drive is 1TB, but I never get to the place to select it.

Alternatively, when I bring up Photoshop Elements, it pops up the following message. When I click on Backup Catalog, the same things happens. It gets stuck and eventually I end the task.

Sorry, but I don't see a command to backup your catalog under the Photoshop Elements 12 File menu.

When I replied last, I included a screen shot of the "back up catalog" under "file".  Unfortunately, it was missing in the posted response.  It really is there.

Here is the screen shot of the backup reminder after bringing up the organizer.
