Lumetri Effect huge input lag in PrPro 25.2.0 build 57

Trying to grade a clip in premiere pro beta but the lag time between making an adjustment and the program monitor updating is about 3-5 seconds. It used to be basically instantaneous. Enabling and disabling the adjustment layer also takes 5+ seconds for the pogram monitor to display.

Clip has basic lumetri adjustment (exposure / shadow / etc) And above it is a adjustment layer with a lut (slog3 to 709 v2 provided by sony) and a creative effect lut from speed looks. So in node speak, that would be three adjustments or layers. It plays back the clip in real-time but making an adjustment is arduous with or without proxies turned on.

Sometimes after awhile it will become more responsive but it still won't "live update" it will only update once you release the mouse button.

Tried clearing cache and prefs, but problem remains.

Hi @scrozier and all,

We've finally got an in-house repro and have introduced a fix in Beta build 25.3 x 03.
Please download this build and let us know if you're still seeing this issue or if things look resolved on your end.

Thanks!

That's super frustrating. We recently introduced a new feature, Media Intelligence, to help you find your shots through search. We're investigating to see if the visual analysis happening in the background could be the culprit.

First things first...

  • Can you reproduce this issue in the latest release version of Premiere Pro 25.1?
  • Can you please share a log so devs can take a peek for any suspicious clues?
    • Start an app session
    • Get into the bad playback state
    • Navigate to Help > Reveal Log File
...

Some people have posted having issues with Lumetri applied to an AL. I haven't had that, so "I can't replicate it". Which is in itself useful data ... my system, for data comparison, is a Ryzen 3860x CPU, 128GB of RAM, and 2080Ti system.

I don't use that much H.264, but some. Mostly BRAW, ProRes, and some mov. Full 4k through 1080 stuff. All about 24fps/23.976.

The lagging bug with Lumetri Color on Adjustment Layer is not present (for me) in the current Premiere Beta 25.2.0 (Build 96), but is present in the release version, that is 25.1.0 (Build 73)

But again, Premiere Beta 25.2.0 (Build 96) can't even start playback of one of my current projects (Media analysis is OFF), tried 5 times, with restarts, etc..., so I don't consider it to be a usable version.

Still not fixed in build 96. Any news Adobe or @DaciaSaenz? It has been like this since around build 25.2.5x or something. So a quite a long time and still no fix or at least some news.

Hi @Kirsi21888295ykon and @V-Edit - Can you post your system specs for us.  Just to confirm you have good performance in 25.1.0 Release, but in 25.2.0 build 96 and higher you can no longer play your sequence without dropping frames?

Here are my system specs:

Macbook Pro M1 Max 64GB

Ryzen Threadripper 7970X

128GB

Nvidia Geforce 3090 RTX

This is happening on both, so I believe it is not because of hardware. Playback is fine. It is just when you do some changes, for example change color settings in Lumetri, timeline freezes for some time. In 25.1 this issue is not there.

Hi @jamieclarke,

I've been waiting for improvements in Premiere Pro, but unfortunately, they are slow to arrive. The current beta version is practically unusable. I’ve recorded a screen capture to illustrate the issue—here’s the link: https://capture.dropbox.com/VG9NrgrlFDzVFtds

Issue Details:

  • Video format: 4K 50fps 10-bit Sony
  • Severe lag and occasional freezes, with delay time increasing based on timeline length.
  • If clips contain Lumetri corrections, the entire cutting process becomes extremely slow.
  • Playback causes CPU usage to hit 100%, making real-time editing impossible.
  • Interestingly, when using an external Lumetri controller, the issue does not occur. ex https://capture.dropbox.com/mKpSrHIZgnW5SI4J

This issue is still not fixed. I'm beginning to think that this is a side effect of some recently implemented new feature... I don't believe when they say that they haven't been able to reproduce this in-house. Some comment about the current situation would be welcome.

They have an acknowledged issue with some Sony media ... I wonder if this is part of that issue.

My media is mainly 8K Canon Raw light, 4K HEVC from Mavic 3 Pro and Pocket 3. So it seems to happen on a lot of different media files.

Gee, when using high-k count long-GOP media from drones one can get lag ... yep, that is the nastiest media for editing made. If you don't have the exact hardware bits for processing that, there can be troubles.

And the 8k Canon is still an issue, but a separate issue, due to each format/codec having completely different processing patterns in the software and hardware. I've seen a few posts with troubles with that specific format/codec.

So you won the prize ... basically all the media you're editing has issues, and they are different issues each needing a different fix. Ouch, basically.

But the hardware you've got is kinda crucial to getting decent results with your specific long-GOP stuff ... and they probably need to figure out that 8k Canon stuff better in Premiere.

Don't have any issues in beta 25.1, so it is not a codec or hardware issue. In latest 25.2 beta I have issues in My Macbook Pro and my 7970X threadripper PC. Cinema RAW light playback with the latest beta 25.2 is very good on my Macbook Pro because of the Metal acceleration. It is just that when you do cuts or color correction timeline freezes.

So that to me, indicates they're working on changes for the Canon format that may actually get it working better. Which is good.

Still getting the issue when turning an adjustment layer on / off with A7s3 footage (even with prores proxies turned on).

There is some weird indexing or read of all the media that happens every time I try to make an adjustment that takes up to 10 seconds if not worse.

My guess is the new Visual search... if this was a bug you would think that it would be fixed by now. This is very basic function we are talking here; timeline performance. Some kind of comment from Adobe would be welcome.

Hi @Kirsi21888295ykon @scrozier & @V-Edit

We fixed performance issues with Media Analysis and would like to know if it improves the issues y'all are seeing with lags and delayed responsiveness to changes made to effects or adjustment layers.
The fixes went in in Beta build 25.2 x 119 so please update to any build after that and let me know how things go.

Thanks,
Dacia

It maybe a bit better, but there is still too much lag in timeline when doing changes in Lumetri for example. Version 25.1 performance should be the minimum target.

Ok, so it is now confirmed that Media Analysis/Visual search is the cause of the lag. I have few suggestions. Please allow to turn these completely off until performance issues are fully resolved (and those must be resolved, otherwise Premiere is useless) Now when you disable the Media Anaysis from the preferences the analysis of the media files is turned off, but timeline is still affected. Maybe add option to exclude sequences from the visual search and that way improve timeline performance? To me it seems that everytime you do a change in timeline it has to do a somekind of "indexing" to the whole timeline and that causes the lag. The more you have clips in the timeline the more there is lag.

I'm on Build 123 and the proble still persists.

I havea 2 minute timeline of an old project with mixed A7S3 and Drone footage which has a global adjustment layer with Lumetri on top of it. When I enable/disable the layer I have to wait 45 seconds for the program monitor to update and the timeline to be usable again. This is with Media Intelligence completely disabled.

While the program stops processing frames it does 400MB/s reads to the NAS and is using CUDA on the GPU (RTX 3090).

This is not fixed at all.

@DaciaSaenz Nope, still super slow. Still weird disk reads  / huge lag time on adjustment layer tweaks or lumetric slider tweaks. Please do not ship this yet its very broken.
