Hello,

I understand the new feature of HDR HLG support, but what about true HDR PQ support? Is this something that is being worked on in a future release?

Regards,

Asaf

They've been going through adding HDR support over time, this was a major up-date from what they had a couple months back. They have stated clearly in the past that they are working on getting to full HDR support, and also to more user color management controls. So I expect we'll get more in a beta release at some point over the next few months, but they never tell anyone ahead of time.

Now we could always just ask @francis-crossman if he is willing to answer any questions about this ... 😉

Also – Rec. 2100 PQ support has been added as a working color space in the latest beta 🙂

Fantastic! Finally! Hooray! Congrats! Can't wait to try it, thank you Matt! So can I export to ProRes QuickTime 422 HQ with Rec 2100 PQ metadata baked into the file?

Sincerely,

Asaf

Yep, there's even presets for ProRes in PQ if you choose the QuickTime format. Have fun!

Amazing. I'm so proud of Adobe for the accomplishments. First you enabled NVIDIA encoding which is so fast now. Now you enabled it for decoding. Great job.

So my next question unrelated: when will Premiere support GPU-acceleration playback for RED footage? Right now, looks like only the CPU is being used. Is there a roadmap for that feature?
Sincerely,

When it comes to RED playback there are two things to consider: debayering and decoding. Currently debayering is done on the GPU if you are using the Metal renderer on macOS or the CUDA renderer on Windows. The decode step is done on the CPU, and depending on your system and the compression ratio of the RED media, that could be the bottleneck.

I can't make any promises, but decoding RED on the GPU is something we're looking at for future improvements. Keep an eye on the beta forums!
