Mask tracking zero progress

Community Beginner ,
May 28, 2022 May 28, 2022

Hello,

I applied the Gaussian Blur effect on a video clip and used the pen tool to apply a mask around a number plate. I then hit the play button to track the mask as the car moves but the progress bar doesn't show any progress. When I select "Stop" I am then unable to select track again as all the buttons are greyed out.

I'm using M1 Max so I don't think it is an isssue with memory.

Thanks,

Hi @Kevin-Monahan. Good news. I found my problem. I was using the "Insta360 Reframe - Plugin for Adobe Premiere" so I could work with Insta360 footage in Premiere. I uninstalled that, and the audio issues are gone. It was Insta Free Frame footage I was editing. So I exported that video with the plugin installed (it stabilised the video). Then uninstalled and exported the audio without any issues - no more random clicks and pops.

I found a solution that worked for me.

I made a mask around my subject using 'opacity' so this may differ by effect.

I copied my opacity mask then nested the clip and pasted the mask from the original onto the nested clip. Tracking worked fine and had no issues from there.

Hope this helps someone.

This is an issue that has been going on for almost two years. Mask tracking only works one out of ten times. Most of the time it is stuck, like the screenshot below:

stuck.pngexpand image

My current system is M1 Max, 32GB ram, Ventura 13.5.1

Premiere Pro version 23.6 (apple silicon AND intel)

Mask tracking has been stuck like that since late 2021 after I got the M1. Sometimes it works and speeds through. Most of the time it gets very stuck, or tracks just a few frames at a very slow speed (minutes per frame) before getting stuck again.

I've made a "bug" post. Hopefully the devs will finally notice. Thank you for the suggestion!

There are many people with mask tracking problems on apple sillicon. Please create an account and upvote if you have the same problem so the devs know. Mask tracking still hasn't been fixed in two years. This is ridiculous.

Same. Mask tracking 0 progress, doesn't go forward. I have a Windows Intel Nvidia setup, so the issue is not only for MAC users.

Whislt waiting for Adobe, I may have a quick and easy work around:

set up the mask and then run the auto tracking BEFORE putting on any blur.

Then once done do all the blur bits

works for me so far!

I have the same issue. Apply a blur, then it just gets hung on the tracker progress.  Been an issue for a long time adobe! Fix this stuff.

Workaround for me - try sizing your video clip exactly to the viewable portion on the edit bar. Premiere would get stick on rendering any hidden part of the video for me. So if I had a clip just slightly extended below another video clip, it would get hung up on that portion. As soon as I removed that part it would render the clip.

Same issue here, been grinding through edits for months now. The only way I've found to get it moving again is:

- Click a different clip in the timeline, then click back to the clip you're trying to mask. The forward/back buttons will not be greyed out anymore and the tracking may work.

- Sometimes, it still doesn't no matter how many other clips you click. Restarting the software often fixes it in this case.

It's RIDICULOUS that this bug has persisted from Premiere 2023 and remains exactly the same in 2024. Just downloaded Final Cut Pro and about to make the switch. I'm done with this BS.

Same issue. M1Max, Ventura 13.2.1, PPro 24.1.0

So, the latest version of PPro and this seemingly old bug within a feature that is so present in workflows these days is still happening... Come on, Adobe!?

A possible work-around that seemed to work for me is not to track forward, but backwards. Gives me much less issues.

I've tried working backwards – it doesn't solve it, still hangs just as often.

My video should be done by now, I'm spending hours just retrying and retrying mask tracking over hundreds of clips, and it is absolutely destroying my productivity at this point. It works on one clip, then it takes me 10 tries involving selecting other clips, moving the playhead away then back onto the keyframe I need to start from, to get it to work on the next clip. I cannot believe Adobe has let this bug persist for SO long. I cannot work like this. Final Cut is ready and waiting for my next project next week and I can't wait to use it.

Hi! I had this same problem and I found a solution for me. Others may be able to find this helps them as well.

  1. Apply a mosaic effect to the clip
  2. Create your mask
  3. Track forward (or backward)
  4. Copy the mask (select the Mask (1) layer and then use cmd+C on Mac or right click and select 'copy')
  5. Apply the gaussian blur effect to your clip
  6. Paste the mask on to the gaussian blur effect (all the keyframes should now appear)
  7. Delete the mosaic effect

My goal: Blur faces of people passing by in interview

My problem: The progress bar would freeze when trying to apply mask tracking to gaussian blur effect in PremierePro 2023 on MacBook Pro. No keyframes were being created.

My work around: Create a tracking mask using the mosaic instead of gaussian blur. Copy and paste the mask onto a gaussian blur effect.

Found a very easy solution (M2 Max):

Just nest the clip you want to track, copy the effect with the mask (gaussian blur) from the clip and paste to the nest instead. Tracking works perfectly on the nest. Hope that helps!
