Fine tune multi-cam edit points while in pause.

I want to add edit points while in pause. I tried this; I put playhead where I want the edit point (while paused), click the RECORD button, then click on the camera that I want to switch to, then click PLAY. However, this doesn't seem to work (it 'sort of' works sometimes but isn't precise). What might I be doing wrong? Does the sequence have to be 'FLATTENED' first? What is the purpose of FLATTEN? When should the sequence be 'FLATTENED'? Can additional changes be made after flattening?

Don't flatten. This wont allow you to change the angle after you do this.
Use Numpad 7, 8, 4 or 5. These are default for Cut to Camera 1 etc.
If you don't have a numpad, remap these commands to something else in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialogue.
These commands work whilst paused.
