Markers - Limits and Frustrations

Markers are a valuable tool.  I'd use them more, but run into limits both with Timeline Markers and Clip Markers.

Timeline Markers

The "Ripple Sequence Markers" is a brilliant PPro feature: Markers will move their place on the timeline with trims and ripple deletes.  But when Timeline Clips are moved, lifted, or extracted, Markers immediately above them remain in place.  There's value in Markers that naturally voyage with Timeline as they are moved around during an edit session.  Which brings us to...

Clip Markers

Adding Markers to Timeline Clips instead of the Timeline itself would seem to be the solution.  Any Marker in a Timeline Clip will move with the clip as it's dragged, cut, copied, pasted etc.  The problem: Clip Markers applied to a Clip in the Timeline affect the original project item in the bin, not just the Timeline in which it was applied, and consequently any and all Sequences using that clip.

One of the many uses for Markers is in the change note process -- A batch of change notes converted into Timeline and/or Clip Markers is potentially a powerful means of making sure those notes will continue to reference their targets even as executing those change notes affects the duration and structuring of the underlying clips.  But the value of a Marker-based workflow is reduced when Markers either don't follow the editing or alternatively infiltrate original master clips and consequently all existing timeline versions.  When churning through change notes I want those change notes associated strictly with the Sequence I'm working on, not alternative cuts or older cuts, and certainly not the master clips in the bin.

Feature request: Markers applied to a timeline, whether to a particular clip on the timeline or to overall timeline itself -- are associated only with the sequence, never the underlying master clips.

A good topic for one or more feature requests. A variation on your suggestion would be to add it as an option in sequence settings. Turned "on," clip instances in that sequence would behave like sequence markers. Turned off, like clip markers.

In any event, a client review feature is sorely needed. As is greater flexibility with markers.

The major 3 alternatives I see to your suggestion:

1) There is a feature request already that proposes being able to import markers to a clip or sequence, noting that we can already export them. This reduces some of the potential workflow complication in other methods, would probably be easier to implement, and could be very flexible.

2) A new feature that allows converting clip and sequence markers back and forth.

3) A plugin (sdk) that provides for importing markers. I see you over in the sdk area....

The SDK can handle it!  We've implemented importing Markers through ExtendScript, so this particular feature we have up and running.

Here are a few more requests...

1 -  Marker Functionality -- increased integration with PPro ecosystem.

How would you like the feature to work?

Ability use Metadata properties on markers.  The goal here is to achieve a consistency of categories and search terms across Clips and Markers, paired up with a search function (let's say a more robust Smart Bin) whose results includes both Clips and Markers.  In the end the name of the game when searching is to find the content you want, and be able to cue it with as much coherence, in as little time as possible.

Request posted here: Marker Functionality -- increased integration with PPro ecosystem.

2 - Marker Panel Functionality -- Additional features

How would you like the feature to work? .

- Ability to sort by Marker Name, Marker Comment, In point, Out Point

- Additional headers, sortable by those headers: Marker Duration (if any), Marker Color, Marker Type, and Any additional Custom-Defined Headers

- Ability to search Markers universally, across multiple sequences and project items.  So that once a project is increasingly marked up there is a way to search all that work centrally.

LATEST

This is not built into Premiere Pro, but I recently created an online tool which can take the CSV markers and display them in other custom formats, which may be helpful: https://Chaptered.app
