Provide a way to delete a transcription

Participant ,
Mar 01, 2023 Mar 01, 2023

When you copy a sequence and then delete clips in it, the old transcription stays with the timeline. Sometimes I copy a timeline because it has a layout and features that I am using consistently throughout a project but am building new edits within it. I realize that creating a template is probably the best way to go, but sometimes I just want to copy another timeline with edits already in it and work from that. I'd like to be able to just completely delete the transcript that comes over with it.

Perhaps offer an option in the ... menu to CLEAR TRANSCRIPTION

I am on MacPro (M1) in PP 23.2 on Ventura

Thanks everyone for you input on this issue. We didn't prioritize building in a "delete transcript" function originally because we believed that the ability to edit the transcript or re-transcribe would cover any common situation.

We hear you though that there are cases where it's just better to clear out the transcript completely. I don't have a date I can promise yet, but, the team is aware of this need.

This obvious button is missing. I want to import a corrected transcript as a text file, but am unable to because I've already auto-transcribed the sequence on Premiere, which cannot be deleted/replaced.

First time trying to use transcript and it didn't ask me for a language.

So I do have the portuguese spoken text transcribed by an "english ear".

You can imagine the mess it produced. ;-).

I just want to delete this whole transcript and make a new one in portuguese.

Is that really impossible?

Thanks for any suggestions if they do exist.

@iris.imaginations,

I agree re having the option to delete. But until we have it, all you need for your situation is "re-transcribe."

In the newest versions (23.4 and 23.5) with text-based editing (i.e. source media transcription), the automatic transcribe gives no prompt for language and causes problems for quite a few users. I have found that almost all of the transcribes other than automatic actually do present the option.

If this is a source media transcription, rather than sequence/static transcription, just find the clip in the Project Panel, right click, and "re-transcribe."

If it is a static transcription, open the sequence in the timeline, go to the Text panel, transcribe tab, 3 dot menu, and re-transcribe.

Each of those should present the option for language.

Also, you can set the default language in Edit -> Preferences -> Transcription. I have not tried the new "detect language." If you change languages frequently, give it a try and let us know how it works.

I totaly back this up. Had to research a long time until i finally found out you can not delete a transcription that you already made. It's annoying. Up.

Just wanted to update this thread with how I was able to get rid of transcription on an audio track.

I had a sequence with audio that had already  been transcribed. I needed to remove it but  I was unable- only able to re-transcribe. I exported the sequence as an XML, and brought it back into a clean project. Transcription data gone! Kind of a pain but works if you need to get rid of it.

This KILLS my workflow, please implement an easier way to delete a transcript so we can upload an SRT file with a different language.

@Hugo36391780k9m5,

Are you uploading the SRT to create captions? Just disable the caption track (eyeball). Once you are in the caption track, you will get the option to import sidecar.

Totally agree. No clue why this still isnt an option. I also like to simply duplicate an existing sequence and mix clips as I'm working through various cuts. On a current project, I split my file into 2 unique files for organizational purposes but only just realized that an unrelated transcription from the other file has been following me across everything new. It's now embedded into everything to the point that I can't even copy a clip without bringing along some chunk of useless transcription. Someone might say that I can simply re-transcribe the sequences, but I have many takes across many shots, most of which I won't end up needing transcription for. What should have been a 'that was dumb' moment, followed by deleting all transcriptions is now a headache and waste of time.

Agreed! With all the Transcript 'bells and whistles' you'd think this would be the easiest one to implement.
