Hi all, I've gone through all image-related discussions in this forum, as well as Preparing Anchored Frame for conversion in RoboHelp – Adobe Technical Communication Blog. I've been inching closer but still not quite there.

Here's the story:

  • Legacy project in FM8 - gifs inserted into anchored frame below line at 175DPI (this worked best to fit the entire screen in, and at the time there was only PDF output, help was added much later).
  • Over time I gave up on TCS1 conversion and started importing into RH10. For screen shots I would just copy the original gifs over the generated output, this was acceptable quality. Not sure what changed or when, but this no longer works, even the copied gifs are displaying poorly.
  • I now have RH2017 and have been experimenting.

FM8 > RH2017:

  • Clear “Use Distiller to Generate Image” and “Do Not Regenerate Images”, set Width and Height to 0.
  • Images come into RH at desired size and look great in the editor, BUT in Preview and in generated output there is blank space where the image should be.
  • HTML view in RH editor:
    <div style="text-align: left;">
    <img alt="BFE_list.gif" id="image0" src="BFE_list.gif" style="margin-left: 14.250pt;  margin-top: 6.750pt; margin-right: 1.500pt; margin-bottom: 4.500pt;"  width="0" height="0" border="0" />
    </div>
    • HTML in generated output:
      <div align="left">
      <img alt="BFE_list.gif" style=" width:100%; margin-left:14.250pt; margin-top:6.750pt; margin-right:1.500pt; margin-bottom:4.500pt; max-width:0.000pt;" id="image0" src="BFE_list.gif" />
      </div>

    So I thought maybe there's too great an age difference between FM8 and RH2017, so I went back to FM8 > RH10:

    • Image conversion settings same as above
    • Images come into RH at desired size, and appear in Preview/generated output BUT now there is extra space below the image.
    • HTML view in RH editor and generated output:
      <div style="text-align: left;">
      <img alt="BFE_list.gif" id="image0" src="BFE_list.gif" style="margin-left: 14.250pt; margin-top: 6.750pt; margin-right: 46.750pt; margin-bottom: 46.750pt;" border="0" />
      </div>

    It's not an option to upgrade FM (this is the only project that still uses it), and based on a long history I know the client will not swing for the time to create a duplicate conditioned set of images sized for help output. They are slowly coming around to the need to blow up the entire process and totally revamp this project that has ballooned with bandaid patches over 16 years . I'm hoping we can either switch to RH2017 entirely and drop the PDF output, or move to either a knowledge base or CCMS like Paligo. They are finally considering this but it will be a big job. So the least that I can do to continue the bandaids until then, the better.

    I think it's probably safest to stay with RH10 at this point. So, anyone have any idea what is increasing the bottom margin in the RH10 output?

    Thanks for reading this far,

    Laurie

    Update:

    Per above, even though the default image conversion settings remained at 0 for all margins, the image was coming across with a margin-bottom that was likely based on the anchored frame size. So I was playing with a way to set the margin-bottom to 0 after the conversion. I couldn't just do a search/replace because the value was different for each.

    So I decided to change the image conversion settings to a small bottom margin and it worked! So here's what I finally decided on to get the images to come across at full size:

    The images are too large but my experiments with resizing left not great results. I haven't yet tried to go back to RH2017, but I may spend a little more time on that, because it would be great to use the thumbnail functionality. For now, the client will be happy enough with large but legible images.

    Re FM>RH2017 and image missing from preview and output: I found that while setting the Width and Height to 0 in the image conversion setting is necessary to pass the image through at full size, the HTML includes these 0 values even though the help says they won't.

    ("To convert the images in FrameMaker documents to the actual dimensions of the images, specify the height and width as 0pt. The <img> tag for such images in the generated HTML does not have the height and width values.")

    <img alt="BFE_protocol.gif" id="image3" src="BFE_protocol.gif"

        style="margin-left: 14.250pt; margin-top: 6.750pt; margin-bottom: 4.500pt;"

        width="0" height="0" border="0" />

    When I delete these values, the image appears in the Preview and generated output. I'm sure I can do an easy search/replace in the output to remove all instances, but if anyone has any better solution I'm happy to hear it.
