May 2023: I am running close to the 100 GB space limit in my Lightroom cloud storage so I have started exporting edited images and deleting albums and folders. However, I have run into anomalous behaviour by Lightroom which means I have to check the results very carefully. I have provided links to descriptions of two separate anomalies I have run into. The Adobe team are taking these reports seriously, so we can expect improvements, but my guess is that editing and AI advances will take priority to attract new customers. In the meantime, if you are exporting and/or deleting images, please observe the results carefully and report unexpected behaviour to Adobe. a) I import photos in large batches from WhatsApp on my iPhone - it's a really useful and time-saving feature in the iPhone Lightroom app. However, images taken within a minute of each other will arrive with the same filenames. When exporting them from Lightroom, I ran into difficulties: https://www.dropbox.com/s/00tnjczky6i4b4c/Adobe%20Lightroom%20Image%20Deletion%20230531.docx?dl=0 b) I use albums that I originally created as collections in Lightroom CC years ago. I added images to the albums in Lightroom. However, when I tried to export all the images to my hard drive after editing the results were definitely not what I expected. Read more here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bh3sqt6h3gputqf/Image%20Export%20Anomalies%20230523.docx?dl=0 Please be very careful to check the results of your export operations before deleting photos from your cloud storage. When I tried to restore the images that I had problems exporting, they reappeared in my clound, but the albums and folders from which they were deleted did not reappear! Finding them among 33,000 photos in my cloud storage was difficult to say the least! If you have had related problems, please report them here with detailed screenshots. Please try and reproduce the behaviour if you can.

It would be really helpful for Lightroom to be able to export multiple albums within a folder while retaining the folder structure and optionally renaming the images within each folder to retain a custom sort order.

@PeterB2 Peter, I don't know if this is how I send a direct message. Let me know if I should do it differently. I have encountered a different failure exporting images: some of the images exported were not the images that I requested to be exported and images that I had deleted a few minutes earlier were substituted for the images I expected. The attached MS Word file shows screen shots. I have also attached the diagnostic log as requested. Let me know what to do next .... Oh dear. The file browser would not allow me to attach the log file. Error message The file type (.html) is not supported. Valid file types are: 8bf, abf, abr, act, aep, afm, ai, arw, as, ase, avi, bmp, book, cel, cfc, chproj, cptx, cr2, cr3, crf, crw, css, csv, dn, dng, doc, docx, eps, epub, exif, fbx, fla, flac, flv, fm, gif, icma, icml, ico, ics, idml, indd, jpeg, jpg, jsfl, json, log, loss, lrcat, lrtemplate, m4a, mif, mov, mp3, mp4, mpg, nef, nrw, obj, odt, orf, otc, otf, pdf, pfb, pfm, pmd, png, ppj, ppt, pptx, prc, prel, prproj, ps, psb, psd, raf, raw, rtf, sbs, sbsar, sbsm, scc, ses, sesx, skp, sol, srt, srw, ssa, stl, svg, swf, tif, ttc, ttf, txt, wav, wmv, x3f, xd, xls, xlsx, xml, xmp. Please tell me how to send the diagnostic log file! PS: At the first attempt to send this message, I tried to attach the diagnostic log file first. I received the error message shown above. Then I tried to attach the MS Word file, but it would not upload – even after 15 minutes of waiting. Therefore I am sending this entire message again, but not with the diagnostic log file this time.

Thank you, Peter. I repeated the same steps and was unable to reproduce the problem. However, now I know what to do if the problem recurs. Thank you for your prompt assistance.

@PeterB2 Thank you for responding quickly. I completely understand and will monitor this issue. However, in the meantime I encountered another apparent Lightroom failure which I have tried to document in detail so you can follow up next week. Like others I now have to start exporting and deleting my Lightroom folders to avoid the 100 GB limit. I use a cross section of Adobe Apps (including Premiere, Acrobat etc.). There's a big monthly cost increase if I go for a plan with increased storage. Further, I don't want to commit to an exclusively Adobe storage plan so I need to export my photos to a cheaper cloud storage provider. Further, cleaning up 1 TB of storage would be far more challenging than cleaning up 100 GB. That's my motivation. So I started the process of exporting and deleting images. Most of my recent images came from my iPhone, and some from my digital SLR. Many of the newer folders have scanned negatives and slides dating back decades. The first dozen or so folders worked as expected. Then I started exporting a folder containing a mix of mp4 videos and jpg images imported from WhatsApp on my phone. The export function worked for the videos, but stopped part-way through exporting the images. I restarted my laptop, and the image export went further but still stopped before completing the export. So I documented what I could and it is in the attached document from MS Word - the images remain uncompressed to avoid losing detail. To help you track down this problem, I will try and avoid using Lightroom for anything except for image viewing for a few days.

@PeterB2 I am encountering a potentially disastrous variation on this problem. I too am running short of space (~20 GB remaining out of 100 GB) so I have started exporting images (many of which have been edited) and saving them on my NAS drives, folder by folder. However, two days ago I discovered that around 60% of all my images from a range of other folders had been moved to the "deleted" folder with 59 days remaining. I selected the "restore" option for all of them, and it is taking more than 48 hours for the restoration to be completed. The real question is how these photos came to be deleted in the first instance, and next, why does it take so long for them to be restored! The photos were not from any of the folders I have deleted myself. Thankfully I have backups so I don't think anything has been lost permanently, but this incident has shaken my confidence in Lightroom! If this thread is closed I will repost to a new thread.

I received 78 images on WhstsApp. I recently updated to ios16.1.1 when attempting to share the images, Lightroom does not appear on the list of icons. However after tapping the ... symbol, Lightroom shows among others in the share to list of Apps. I rebooted the phone to confirm that the bug is repeatable. See the screen below. Note that I can share a single image as before the update, Also 3 selected images worked OK. However, manually selecting 59 of the original 78 triggered the same error. Manually selecting 21 at a time, everything worked as before the update.

Hi Willi First, I had already adopted the practices you advocated. The file sizes were less than 5 MB at the time and all graphics were linked, not embedded. The problem prevents you from saving the file you have been working on so there is no possibility of recovery later. I am hoping that the Adobe people will add this to the list of possible causes for damaged files and advise, as a solution, to work with files on one's local hard drive which are not being sync'd with a cloud service. I'm not sure how to get that message to the Adobe people. If you know, let me know. Thanks for the comment.

I have found another reason that causes InDesign files to become damaged and therefore unable to be saved, beyond the reasons stated in the "Identify and troubleshoot file issues" page at https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-file-issues.html. At my company we use the Box cloud service, and I use the Box Drive application to synchronise my files with the cloud service on my Windows 10 laptop. Our internet service is not fast (~ 20 BPS) and has frequent periods of congestion and slow responses: that might be a contributing factor too. I have found the using InDesign with documents located in synchronised Box folders frequently results in damaged files that cannot be saved or recovered. I transferred all my files to a folder on my solid state hard disk drive the the problems did not recur. So, I suggest Adobe people add this possible explanation to their help page listed above. I have not checked other cloud services to see if similar problems occur with them.

Woooah... I should have checked more carefully. The capture times have been changed, seemingly at random, by up to 24 hours. Some have been changed by 3 hours, some by 9 hours, others different offsets (not whole hours). So far I have not found any that have been time shifted by more, but I will keep looking. I only did two years of images using the method you suggested, so I can probably wait a while before doing more. With the one folder I checked really carefully, I had to re-import the images and replace the keywords.... I will report back after doing some more over the next few days or so.

Thank you, John. The capture date and time is now registered in the catalogue so that the images are sorted in the correct order. Importantly, the tags are preserved. The metadata conflict is still there: the preserved file name shows ~.MOV. However, now I can work with these photos once again. Should I report this issue as a bug?

Thanks, DLPaige, I actually used the Lightroom Classic feature as you have suggested to import the PSE catalogues and ended up with this issue.

Thanks, John. Here is a screenshot. Exposing the metadata filter at the top reveals that the images in this folder are considered to have unknown capture dates (one of many in my old photos, this one dating back to 2000). In the right panel where the metadata for the selected image shows, the capture date is correct. So it's not clear why the filter panel sees the image with an unknown capture date. The images do not sort by capture date either - so Lightroom cannot see the capture date, presumably. Notice also that the 'preserved file name' has .MOV extension. Here is the dialog box that opens. If I select 'import settings from disk' Lightroom then responds to the capture date properly, but all the tags disappear. If I select 'overwrite settings' the tags are retained, but the capture date is set to todays date and time! Suggestions welcome. After I posted above, I installed PsE2021 to see whether it would load up my old catalogs. It asked me for a 'TLY' file, and would not recognize my existing PE catalogs. At least LC did load up the catalogs, but as you suggest, it appears to be 'buggy'. In fact, after restoring tags manually for about 30-40 mins, the tag feature stopped working. I rebooted and then it worked fine for a while.

PS: Maybe I should clarify. The images imported from the PE catalgues have the tags present in LC. However, if I click on the metadata conflict indicator for the iamges, I have to choose whether to use the information in the original file or the catalogue to resolve the metadata conflict. If I choose the original file, the capture date is restored, but the tags are lost. If I choose the catalogue information, the capture date information is "unknown" but the tags are retained. Interestingly, the capture date is still in the Metadata panel, but somehow the capture date is listed as "unknown".

I used Photoshop Elements (PE) for 12 years then changed to Lightroom Classic (LC). However, I am only now importing all those old images back into LC, all 28,000 of them. Unfortunately, importing the PE catalogue into LC has resulted in image metadata conflicts - the image preserved filenames are labelled as .MOV instead of .JPG, and, crucially, the image capture data is labelled as "unknown". Fortunately, I elected to write the image tags from PE to the original image files. To overcome the metadata conflicts, all I can do is remove the images from Lightroom and re-import them. That's OK, the image capture information is all there. However, LC does not seem to import the image tags, even though I can see them with Windows file explorer. Does anyone know how to import the image tags into Lightroom? Or maybe suggest an alternative way to overcome the metadata conflicts? Can Adobe people explain why the image tags are not imported? Maybe it's a bug, or a future feature!
