Hi @jenkmeister This seems a little odd, the clip is only a few seconds long, it is under 40mb in size and there is nothing else in my comp (no effects, no other layers). Why would this consume 100% of ram allocated to AE? Also, whilst cache frames is indeed enabled, the entired clip is already cached, rendered and is now idle. So what is it still caching exactly? Thanks

Performance of AE 2024 so far seems pretty awful, for example; on a fresh install, clean startup, I have just imported a single 1080p MP4 (h.264), made a single cut to the clip, and hit export.. during the render memory usage hit 97%. Now AE is idle and is the only application I have running, it still has 54GB sat in memory! It also appears to be constantly using 8% CPU even though I'm just sat in the render queue looking at a completed job. CPU: 7950X GPU: 4090 (latest studio drivers) RAM: 64GB DDR5 6000 CL30 CACHE SSD: SN850X 4TB Windows 11 (latest updates) AE V 24.1.0

Yeah, I would also add that there is clearly a way around this because so many other applications do not behave this way in Windows. 3ds Max for example does not lock focus on drop down menus like PS does.. and autodesk havent updated that UI in 800 years so.. Who can we reach out to @CShubert ?

Any update on this @CShubert ? I understand the issue is caused by Windows, but others applications seem to get around this. Would it be possible to build in the equivalent of hitting the escape key when a selection is made from a dropdown? I'm no coder, so I appreciate that might be an oversimplification, but this.. feature.. is infuriating when trying to work efficiently in Windows, especially as a user who has to work across both platforms. Thanks

So you're saying its a limitation of the OS and it can't be resolved, basically? Thanks

Here's an example: I simply created a new layer, changed the blending mode to lighten, and now you can see focus is locked on the blending mode dropdown (blue outline) and thus prevents you from using any keyboard shortcuts. You have to first click away, or hit escape to release focus from that dropdown. You do not have to do this in PS on a Mac.

Hi @CShubert I don't need to reset my preferences because this is a new install of the latest PS release, on a clean install of Windows 11. This issue has existed for years and was also present in Windows 10. I tried it on a third workstation (also Win 10) just to be sure and I can confirm it was the same. If you just try what I have described on any windows machine you will see what I mean. It's not specific to mine. thanks

On a Mac, if you select a blending mode in your layers pallete you can carry on working as normal and keyboard shortcuts function as expected. In Windows, if you change the blending mode (or anything that uses a dropdown window), focus is then locked dropdown, essentially disabling your keyboard shortcuts until you either hit escape or click away. Please can this be fixed? I was hoping this would be resolved by now but it's still a huge annoyance for those who have had the misfortune of switching to Windows from MacOS. I know it's just one additional click/keypress but it adds up over time and ultimately just slows you down/drives me insane.

Thanks @JohnColombo this sounds really promising. I have just added to those threads (and I must have commented on countless ones before them!) Personally I don't think adding that functionality to pre-comps is the solution, I have projects with hundreds of layers which have very few pre-comps (and would actually cause issues if I started pre-comping everything). I would just love the ability to put layers into basic 'dumb' folders (the same as PS) purely for organisation and to reduce scrolling headaches. I would also hope that this then has the added advantage of improving performance on layer heavy projects too.

I agree, and group like functionality to pre-comps would be useful, but I would also argue that basic folders are still required. Pre-comp'ing everything is not the solution (and also would cause issues in some cases) to a messy timeline, we just need a way of organising hundreds of layers without having to pre-comp everything, and it seems like a very basic folder which we can toggle down (the same as PS) would not only save us from endless scrolling but also really help with UI performance.

@JohnColombothanks for clearing that up, and to the team for rectifying the issue. I wouldnt say it is completely resolved, it's still a little laggy, my Macbook Pro (which is from 2013 and far less powerful than my workstation) still outperforms it when dragging keyframes, but it's a huge improvement over what it was, the fact the keyframes are no longer 'sticky' is great. Is there any reason why, even when there is no value change, the cache constantly rebuilds when you move a keyframe. For example create a solid, a single keyframe for opacity (but leave it at 100%) and drag it around, you'll see what I mean. Maybe not the place to ask, but I'm going to 😄 ..Now that this has been rectified is there any chance you guys can work on what we've been begging for (for years) and that is folders for layers! Please save us from the endless scrolling!

Oh that's interesting @nilsj65095933 Would you mind sharing the rest of your spec? I think this will maybe help Adobe move away from investing an NVIDIA issue. I was actually about to drop a chunk of change on a 7950x / 4090 build but now it looks like I'd be better off just buying a Mac, or finally moving over to Nuke. It's very frustrating for those of us who are stuck using Windows (hard to switch because of other software requirements, i.e. 3ds Max ..sigh) I do recall another employee on here once saying that Mac was the priority for Adobe and their app development, Windows is effectively a port.. is there any truth to this @JohnColombo

Sorry I mis-typed, I'm running Corsair memory. So I guess the only common part is Samsung SSD's. Even though the other drive you tested is Kingston @ivan.markelov I guess it could still technically be Samsung memory?

Thanks for keeping us updated @JohnColombo It is odd that you cannot reproduce the issue, are those two workstations you mentioned also running Win 10 Pro 64? Also what platform are they, intel/amd? I wonder if those of us who have the issue can find some other similiarities with our workstations. @JBrown321 and @ivan.markelov would you be so kind as to list your hardware specs and OS, maybe we can spot something we have in common? I can also confirm that my cache bar is behaving the same as @JBrown321 described. I can start with a new blank project, create a solid, add a couple of keyframes (but no value changes) and in addition to being incredibly laggy when dragging the keyframes around it also appears as though it is being constantly re-cached. My scratch disk is a dedicated M.2 nvme SSD, I did try switching over to my OS SSD but this seemingly made no difference.

This is exactly how mine is @JBrown321 I've updated to the latest release and it's still terrible. Even in an empty project. I wonder if this issue is limited to Windows? Are there any Mac users in here facing the same poor performance? I'm guessing not as there would be a lot more comments. I assume current gen Mac is the priority when it comes to adobe's app development resources anyway.. Any updates on this @JohnColombo ?

Thanks for the info Dana. I almost purchased an RTX card as I am so tired of trying to resolve this issue but I'm glad I didnt now. Are you using the latest Nvidia drivers (studio or game ready?) with 22.6? I just reverted to that version of AE with the latest studio drivers and whilst it does feel a little snappier the issues are still present. I'll roll back my Nvidia drivers now and see if that combo is any better.

@JohnColombojust rolled back to 472.84 Upon opening the current release of AE I was shown this, it was stuck at 40% for a while, it took around 5 mins to complete Unfortunately this still has not rectified the issue. Laggy timeline marker, super laggy (and sticky!) keyframes and layers. This is also the case for this driver version + the latest AE beta.

Hi @JohnColombo Thanks for your input on this one. I have just tried the latest AE beta and the problems are all still present. Hopefully downgraading to the 4. driver is not the solution because those are from 2021! I'm downloading an older 5. driver now and will report back. Update: I have just rolled back to 526.98 from November 2022, and as soon as I started AE I received this warning (the reported issues are also still present):

Unfortunately I have not, I've spent 2 days trying to get to the bottom of it. Re-installing Windows is now my next last resort. I can only guess that is related to CUDA as I'm also having graphical issues in InDesign too. Are you workstations also running NVIDA cards by any chance?

I recently updated to 23.1.0 and just thought that the awful performance was because my project was getting pretty heavy with a few hundred layers (which AE has always suffered from, because pre-comping everything is not the solution and we still don't have layer groups/folders..) But.. I've just cleared my cache, created a new project and already I can see there is an issue, I don't even have any layers in this new comp and the timeline indicator lags behind my mouse pointer when I move it. If I create a simple new layer (white solid) and set a couple of keyframes, when I drag one of the keyframes left or right it massively lags behind my pointer, and is very steppy. Moving a layers position along the timeline or adjusting its start/end position is also the same, in fact it's so delayed that things get 'stuck' to my pointer and behave as though I have not released left mouse button, and thus end up where I dont want them. I have cleared my cache, updated windows, tried the latest NVIDIA drivers (standard and studio), tried switching between CUDA and software.. all to no avail. @Jeremy259041676ecb@SpingogogoI think I have discovered the cause and possibly the solution to this bug. It appears to occur when your restored/non-maximized window state is small enough that the toolbars cannot be expanded (see attached) so they are all minimized (even if you reset your profile). You can then go maximized and restore your profile, but then next time you launch PS it appears to remember the collapsed state that those toolbars were in (even if it launches maximised). I'll try and explain, see if you guys can recreate the same: 1 - Open PS and click on the 'restore' button (top right, next to close) and see if the PS window is now so small that the toolbars are all minimised (like the attached) 2 - Drag this out further and then reset your profile (your toolbars should all now be as expected) 3 - Close PS 4 - Relaunch PS, it should open with the same window size as it did when you closes it, now maximise the window and reset your profile again 5 - Close and Re-open PS. It should now open fullscreen with your saved layout! Let me know if that works for you Cheers

Same issue here. Colour management is on, working space is sRGB. I discovered that if I export to media encoder from AE then the resulting file (H.264) has the gamma shift. BUT, if I export directly from AE first to DNxHD the resulting file matches my viewport perfectly, and if I then convert this file to H.264 using ME it still matches! So the issue must be somewhere between AE and ME.
