Did you know you can use AI to remove distractions, try a new background, or add an object to your image quickly and easily? You can even remove unwanted objects and fill in the space. It’s really easy using Generative Fill. Generative Fill is an amazing new suite of AI-powered capabilities powered by Adobe Firefly that enable you use simple text prompts to add, extend, or remove content non-destructively.

❶ Create or open an image in Photoshop
❷ Make a selection
Use a selection tool such as the Lasso tool, Object selection tool, or one of the other tools to make a selection around a desired object or an area in your image. You can double-tap or long-press the active selection tool from the toolbar to bring up additional Selection tools.
❸ Generate new content
Tap the Generative Fill button in the Contextual Prompt that appears.
Tap to agree to the User Guidelines and Cancel to remove the dialog.

For this example, I selected an area on the sofa and entered the prompt "blanket".
Tap Generate. Photoshop will create a new layer with the generated content.
You will get a few variations to choose from. Click on a thumbnail image to view it. Select the Generative Layer to bring up the Properties panel if you want to edit your text prompt.
To generate additional variations, modify the text prompt and tap Generate in the Properties panel.
Tap the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the variation to delete it from the Properties panel.

Tips for creating with Generative Expand and Fill
Learn how to write effective AI prompts to create extraordinary and relevant content. A prompt is a set of instructions given to an artificial intelligence (AI) to complete a task or produce an output. These prompts control the AI’s behavior and influence the quality and relevancy of its responses. Descriptive prompts allow you to create the images you envision. If you are not happy with the results, simply add descriptive words or rephrase the prompt to get closer to the look you desire.
Be specific and descriptive
The better you describe what you want to generate, the closer the results will be. Let your imagination run wild and see what you can come up with. Here are a few examples:
Realistic picture of a woman with long flowing hair, and blue eyes in a purple dress
A tropical island paradise, pristine turquoise waters, lush greenery, and vibrant exotic fruits, realistic
Steampunk submarine underwater navigating past bioluminescent sea creatures
General Tips
Leave out words like "generate" and "create"
Use direct language with a subject, several descriptive adjectives, and keywords
Avoid using instructions such as "add", "fill", "make", and "change"
When there is something you don't want generated, try commands such as “remove,” “no,” or “without”
Deleting unused variations helps keep your file size smaller
To pin the task bar to a specific location, move it to a location, click on the three-dot menu, and choose "pin bar position"
Working with Generative Fill
Limit selections to the area you want generated because everything in the selection is likely to change
Include a small amount of the surrounding image to get a better blend between the generated image and the existing image
Try making your selection in the shape that you want the item to fill
To remove content, try generating without a prompt, the area will be filled based on the surroundings
To change a background, select the subject, invert it, and describe what you want generated
Try adding feathering or opacity to help generated content blend into your scene
Working with Generative Expand
Generative Expand can expand your image to a specific size and fill the new area based on a prompt (You can leave the prompt blank to see what Photoshop comes up with)
Try performing multiple actions simultaneously, such as cropping, expanding, and rotating
Use aspect ratios to quickly define how you want to expand your image
Generative Expand can be used to expand patterns
Use the Straighten tool to level the horizon line, and then generate content in the empty space
If you don't get the results you want...
Click generate again to get additional variations
Try a different prompt or add more descriptive words
Try making your selection in the shape of what you want to generate
Rate or report your results to let us know where we can improve (in the more menu in the properties panel or contextual task bar)
Ideas to get you started with generative AI in Photoshop
Expand your image – Change the aspect ratio by changing a landscape orientation to portrait and letting Generative Expand fill in the missing areas
Add more space around an object – Center your subject more by expanding one direction if it is too close to the edges.
Remove unwanted objects – Remove people from the background of a portrait or remove objects to improve your composition.
Blend images together - Put two or more images together and select an area between them to generate a smooth transition.
Add objects to a scene – Make your image more interesting by adding items such as a cat on the couch...
Change backgrounds – Add a blue sky or mountains
Add jewelry, hats, facial hair – Change your look by adding accessories or a new hairdo
Complete missing parts of an image – After removing an unwanted person from your image, use Generative Fill to complete the person or object they were blocking.
Add shadows and reflections – Photoshop is great at adding beautiful water reflections to your landscapes. Get creative and see what you can generate.
Change clothing – Did you add a person dressed for summer to a winter scene? No problem, just use Generative fill to put a coat on them to make it more believable.

How to use the Camera Raw filter
Have you ever wished you could enhance your photos with the ease and precision of Lightroom, right inside Photoshop? Well, you actually can! The Camera Raw Filter in Photoshop is a powerful editing tool that offers a Lightroom-like interface and a comprehensive set of sliders, making it the perfect tool for quick and effortless photo editing. This is just one of the many ways you can edit images in Photoshop. You can continue using all of Photoshop's other features after using the filter, such as adjustment layers. Read about the filter, watch the video, and follow the steps to try it yourself. Once you use it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!
AdobeCare on YouTube: How to use the Camera Raw Filter in Photoshop
❶ Select the layer you want to edit
In the Layers Panel, click on the layer you want to edit if it is not already active.
❷ Create a Smart Object (optional)
If you want the option to go back and edit your changes in the future, you can turn the contents of the layer into a Smart Object before opening the filter. To learn more about Smart Objects, you can read Work with Smart Objects in Photoshop. To create the Smart Object, go to filter > Convert for Smart Filters from the main menu. If you get a pop-up with the message “To enable re-editable smart filters, the selected layer will be converted into a smart object.”, Click OK.
❸ Open the Camera Raw Filter
Now that you created a smart object, you can open the filter by going to filter > Camera Raw Filter from the main menu
❹ Make edits to your image
Click on the sliders icon in the top right of the interface. You will see several collapsed categories. Each contains a group of related topics that you can edit for a given category.
Click on a section to expose the sliders and make edits. Most people are very familiar with the sliders for Light and Color, but not everyone knows about the amazing edits you can make using Dehaze, Color Mixer, Lens Blur, and others. Try everything to see what is possible, and you may find some new favorites! For more detailed information, see Make color and tonal adjustments in Camera Raw.
You can make the following adjustments from the panels:
Light: Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks
Color: White Balance, Temperature, Tint, Vibrance, and Saturation
Effects: Texture, Clarity, Dehaze, Vignette, and Grain
Curve: Fine-tune the tonal scale using curves - Parametric Curve, Point Curve, Red, Green, and Blue Channels
Color Mixer: Hue, Saturation, Luminance, and Color
Color Grading: Adjust hues in Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights
Detail: Sharpening, Noise Reduction, and Color Noise Reduction
Optics: Remove chromatic aberration or Distortion and Vignette and Defringe
Lens Blur: Customize blur and bokeh effects
Geometry: Adjust different types of perspective and level corrections
Calibration: Shadows, Red Primary, Green Primary, and Blue Primary
Below the slider icon, there are other icons for Healing, Masking, Red Eye, and Presets. Masking lets you limit the areas where the edits will take effect. Presets let you make a group of changes with just one click. Take a look at the presets that are already there. There are quite a few, and you may find they save you time when you are editing. Click OK in the bottom right corner when you are done editing to return to the regular Photoshop interface.
NOTE: If you save images in a raw format from your camera, you may want to look into the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in so you can benefit from the additional information captured in raw files, especially to remove noise and to recover highlights and shadows if your exposure is off. The plug-in allows you to view and edit the raw files before opening them for further editing in Photoshop, or before exporting them to image formats such as JPG or TIFF. You can find the plug-in here: Camera Raw plug-in installer. To learn about the differences between JPEG and RAW, check out What is the difference between JPG and RAW files.
