Thanks for the reply Monte307, but that is discouraging. So you do not do incremental backups, just a full drag and drop copy of everything, every time? Then you are saying that with only those two folders; "Catalogs" and "Pictures" (my photo "repository") copied to my external drive, I can run PSE and all my photos, tags, faces, locations, etc will all be there too? If I did that procedure, how would I test it to see if it works? If the folders are on an external drive can I just navigate to the drive and "open" them from within PSE like I would any internal catalog? I may end up doing that too, if I can't get PSE to do a regular backup. Thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time to explain your procedure. -Ken

I have posted my backup problem here already and received no help. I have "chatted" for 3 hours with Adobe tech support about the problem and they are so far unable to help. I have a MacBook Pro (M1) running OS 15.1 (Sequoia). I have Adobe Elements 2023 core version 21.1. I can do a full catalog backup on the internal Mac disk but PSE crashes every time I try to backup to an external SSD. Since I am having so much difficulty with this problem and I am very uncomfortable with having only an internal disk backup, I want to try a work-around. I have copied a successful backup file from the internal disk to the external SSD and I want to try it and see if it will restore correctly. I do not have another computer to try this on so I will have to use the same Mac. I have plenty of disk space on the Mac so that will not be a problem, I am just worried about losing or corrupting my current catalog in the process. My question: Can I create a new catalog within PSE on my current Mac and then restore the backup there from the external SSD as a test, without jeopardizing my currently functioning catalog? Will I be able to designate another location for all new files related to this test restore so they are not mixed with current files? If successful (or unsuccessful) will I be able to simply and completely delete the newly restored test catalog and all related files afterward? Thank you, -Ken

Thanks for the reply buffrkhanso, I am not trying to restore my catalog, just trying to create a full backup on an external drive. I went through the same process as you migrating all photos and videos from Windows to Mac back in 2023. I had a lot of problems but this community helped me through it and all is now working well except for this problem with backing up. I think if you do a search here for the threads I started you may find some help with your problems. As I recall the initial restore process did take several hours, maybe even overnight. FYI here is the current info on my database: Catalog Size: 305.50MB Catalog Cache Size: 3.90GB I have never counted all my photos and videos so I am not sure how many I actually have, I could not find a way to give me that total from within PSE. -Ken

Good morning. I am running Adobe Elements 2023 Organizer, version 21.0.0, on an M1 MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma 14.5 with 16 GB memory. I am able to do a full PSE backup on my Mac hard drive with no problems, but when I try to back it up on an external USB drive PSE crashes when it gets around 90%. Every time. The external drive is a 1 TB Western Digital My Passport SSD connected directly to the Mac via a USB C cable. When PSE crashes I get the message that Photoshop Elements has quit unexpectedly and I can restart the program or look at the crash report. I was a little hasty when I posted my previous reply. I can get the thumbnails to show up by cropping the photos, but the cropping procedure makes the file size get very large. I don't want to hijack this thread so I will not ask questions about it here. My original question was answered and I thank all who participated. I would still like to know if there is a way to bypass the maximum file size limit on my Mac like there is on Windows machines.

Thanks for your suggestions Greg. I did a little experimentation in the Editor and found I could either resize the photo a little or crop the photo a little and either one resulted in the photo thumbnail now showing up. What I didn't expect was the reduction in file size. Either method resulted in a reduction in file size of more than half although I could not see any difference in the image when zoomed way in. What's going on? I will experiment with doing this in batches too as you suggest. I would like to just crop the images and then overwrite the original but I can't seem to do that, PSE insists that I rename the edited file. Even when I delete the original from the catalog it will not let me rename the edited photo with the same name as the original unedited photo. Is there a way to do that? It wants me to make "versions" but I don't really care about the original so would rather just overwrite it.

It appears that it might be a maximum file size issue. I read the article linked to earlier "Maximum Image Size Limits" that stated the maximum file size is 72 megapixels (75,497,472 pixels). I went through and calculated the megapixels for the first 16 images I tried to import. (I rounded off the last 3 digits) The first 8 images did not go through and the smallest one of these was 76,350,000 pixels. The next 6 images did import correctly and the largest one of them was 75,166,000 pixels. Image 15 was 75,934,000 pixels and did not come through. Image 16 did come through and was 74,046,000 pixels. It would seem that the limit is somewhere between 75,934,000 pixels and 75,166,000 pixels, which agrees with the value given in the article. I am disappointed in this situation. I am scanning these old family negatives at 3200dpi so it takes almost 2 minutes for each one to complete and I have already scanned 454 images so as you can see this represents a lot of time! I hope there is some way around this problem.

I moved PSE (ands everything else) from Windows to MAC a couple of years ago. I had some trouble with that transition but with the help of this community I got it worked out and it has been fine since. The PSE folder locations, as far as I know, are where PSE put them when I installed it. Path: Root directory>Pictures>PSE catalog>Pictures,ProgramData,Videos The folder “PSE Catalog” above is one I created to hold all PSE related files when I installed the program. I am not sure where PSE stores the actual “Catalog” you are talking about. I don’t even know exactly what the “catalog” is. Is it one file? Is it multiple files? Does it have a folder structure? Can I see it in Mac Finder? I don’t think I changed any default file locations when I installed PSE. I did not see the “Not supported” message, only the “already exists in catalog” message. As far as file size, they range from 5.4MB to 12.4MB. The 12.4MB file came through ok, but many smaller ones did not.

OK, it’s a somewhat long description but here is what I am doing: All my PSE database files are inside the sub-folder “PSE 2023 catalog 10-16-23” which is in my “Pictures” folder on my MAC hard disk. I have been scanning the new negatives into a different sub-folder on the hard disk which is NOT inside my “Pictures” folder. All the new scan files have the same filename except for a unique sequential 3 digit number included at the end of the name of each photo. It is a long descriptive filename which I just made up and I KNOW there are no other files with that name already inside my PSE database. There are other photos with the same 3 digit sequential number contained in their filename but not with the rest of the filename. This is an example of the filename: “Med format negatives070.jpg” There are 136 files in the folder beginning with “Med format negatives001” and ending with “Med format negatives136” With my cursor active on the “Pictures” folder in the tree structure visible from inside PSE I hit “Import from files and folders” and then select the folder which has the scans I just made and hit import. They come in to PSE and now show up on the tree in the correct location (NOT inside the “Pictures” folder) but only about half or so have thumbnails, the rest have a placeholder icon with a torn page looking picture which I assume means a broken link or some other kind of error. But at import I saw the message that some files are skipped because they are already in the database. I ran a “reconnect all missing files” but it didn’t find any. I then removed the folder from the database and then repeated the import with the same result.

Hello everyone I have a MacBook Pro with M1 chip running Sonoma 14.4.1 I have Adobe Elements Organizer 2023 version 21.0.0 I do genealogy and am scanning old photo negatives. A few years ago I had an inexpensive scanner and scanned a lot of my photo prints and imported them into PSE. I now have a better scanner that can scan negatives so I am re-scanning the negatives of many of the same photo prints only at a much higher resolution than I had used before. (With much better results I might add). My problem is that when I import these newly scanned files (all with different date, different time, different filename, different size) some of them only show a placeholder and I get a message something to the effect of "The file already exists in the catalog". I did a visual search and can find the offending "duplicate" file, it is the same "photo" that was scanned years ago but at the lower resolution. It would seem that PSE is recognizing the face of a named person or other elements in the photo and rejecting the newer, higher resolution version of the same photo. I will ultimately be deleting the old versions of the photos but they have meta data (face names, captions, etc) that I want to copy to the new version before I delete them. Is there some way I can have both versions of the photo in the same cataogue at the same time so I can manually transfer the meta data from within PSE? Thank you, -Ken I

Thanks Michel, I am a curious person by nature, so if you don't mind, here is a related question: After the restore process when I follow that path "10 folders deep" that I previously listed in my first post, there are now three catalogs listed there, "Ken", "Ken 1" and "My catalog" yet only two of them are available from inside PSE, those being "Ken 1" and "My catalog" It would seem that perhaps the restore process created two new catalogs with the same name so it automatically added a "1" to the duplicate. If that is true, then why did it create the duplicate and why is it not available from inside PSE? If this is normal behavior then I will just leave it there and go on with my life, but like I said, I am a curions person.... -Ken

I finally got this issue resolved and wanted to share the fix on here. I ended up calling Adobe support, the tech guy was baffled by this too but suggested I try deleting the original restored file structure and photos on the Mac and then copy the same file structure with photos in it directly from the Windows machine to the Mac and see if it could then reconnect the missing files. This didn't work but his suggestion got me thinking about the file structure inside the catalog and how it might be causing the problem. This is how I fixed it: The file structure in PSE15 on my Win10 laptop had TWO top level folders, each with sub-folders containing photos. One of the top level folders had the exact same name as the catalog. I do not know how that happened. When I previously backed up the catalog and restored it on my Mac, all the photos from the top level folder with the name "Pictures" were visible and none of the photos from the other top level folder, which had the same name as the catalog, were visible. So this time on the Win10 computer, and from within PSE15, I moved all the photo sub-folders into ONE of the top level folders BEFORE I backed it up. Then when I backed it up and restored it onto my Mac ALL my photos, with corresponding sub-folder structure, were now visible inside that one top level folder in PSE2023, just like they are in PSE15 on the Win10 computer. Well I thought everything was going good, I restored the backup file in PSE2023 and it said it was successful but now it looks like the folder structure is there but there are only gray boxes with question marks in them where all the photos should be. I went to file>reconnect all missing files and it wants me to tell it where all the files are! I thought they were in the backup file and would be restored along with the folder structure. What happened?

Hi, I have PSE15 installed on an HP laptop running Windows 10. It is an old slow machine. I bought an Apple MacBook Pro about a year ago and have been migrating everything over to it. Last week I purchased PSE2023 for Mac from the Apple App Store and have been getting used to it. I am now ready to move my catalog from the Windows 10 laptop to the Mac. I have been searching and reading the Adobe website and this forum, I have found a lot of good info and I think I am ready to go, but before I do I would appreciate it if someone would look over these steps and let me know if I am missing anything. Open my PSE15 catalog Run “Save Metadata to files” Run “Reconnect All Missing Files” Run “Backup Catalog” and save the backup to my attached external hard drive Connect external HD to my Mac Create a new folder on the Mac with the same name as my existing PSE15 catalog Copy the backup file into that folder on the Mac Open PSE2023 Run File>”Restore Catalog” from the backup file Before doing all this I have a question. When I initially started PSE2023 it installed itself in the “Applications” folder and created “My Catalog” in a folder located at the end of the following path: Catalog Location: /Users/my name/Library/Group Containers/JQ525L2MZD.pepe/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs/21.0/My Catalog That is nested 10 folders deep! Is there some reasoning for this, and could I (or should I) put it somewhere else if I want to, such as in my “Pictures” folder instead? I have PSE15 on my old Windows10 computer and have been using it, but it is very slow. I have had one foot in MS Windows and one foot in Apple for several years now and I have decided to move completely to Apple. I have ordered a new 14" Apple MacBook Pro with the M1 chip. Today I went to my Adobe account to see what would be required to get the newest standalone version of PSE for Mac and I can not find a way to order it. All I can find to purchase at Adobe.com is a monthly subscription account. I do not want a subscription account. I can find PSE 2022 for Mac stand alone software for sale on Amazon but not on the Adobe website. Am I missing something? Others have posted here to be sure to get the software directly from Adobe to avoid scams, etc. How do I do that? BTW, before posting this question I have been perusing the Apple discussion forum and after reading all the problems posted there recently, I am not even sure if I want to use PhotoShop for Mac at all!

Hi, I have been naming faces in my catalog and it is slow but mostly working ok. So far I have 958 faces named and most show up ok. I do, however, have 18 faces that do not show up in the "People" workspace thumbnails. If I click on the gray circle where the thumbnail photo should be, with the "Faces" button selected, the gray circle shows up in the box below. but if I click on the "Photos" button, then the actual photo shows up in the box. It is not round like a the rest of the thumbnails though, it is the rectangular shape of the actual photo. If I then "X" out of the box the gray circle appears again. The only thing I can see that all 18 of these photos have in common is that they are a small photo with only one face, and that one face takes up almost the entire photo. I tried removing the name and then renaming, but that did not work. I tried making a small edit in Photoshop Editor then resaving and renaming but that did not work either. These 18 faces were all discovered and presented as unamed automatically by PSE15. Also, if I view the photo in the "Media" workspace and hover over the face, the white circle and name do not appear unless I zoom in to the maximum. When I do this, the white "face circle" is right at the side margins of the photo, meaning if the photo was any smaller or the circle was any larger it would not fit on the photo, I am thinking this may have something to do with the problem. Is there some way to reduce the size of the face circle perhaps? Thanks for your help. -Ken

Hi, I am a casual user of PSE 15 and have recently migrated my catalog to a newer Win 10 laptop. Everything seemed to go well. Today I was browsing my photos and remembered about manually saving metadata so I started the process and then went to lunch. When I returned the process was finished an all appeared well. An hour or so later I opened the recycle bin just to see if I could save some room and there were over 650 photos in there, all with the deleted date/time corresponding to when I saved the metadata! I was panicked, but when I reopened PSE all the photos still appeared to be there. I was still not comfortable so I tried to restore the photos but windows said all the photos already existed in the folders and did I want to overwrite them? What happened? The deleted photos appear to be duplicates but why are they there? Thanks for your help, Ken PS:my catalog is still on the original computer in it's entirety so I have not lost anything permanently.

Thank you for the suggestions Michel, I have not actually used the PSE "downloader" function yet but it looks to be useful for renaming files as you suggest. I do not have a "card reader" on my computer, but I presume I could use my camera connected via USB in the same way. (although slow transfer rate) When it comes to photography I am strictly a hobbyist and take my photos with my iPhone or Canon Elph 340HS. I am only beginning with Photoshop and only have a small fraction of my photos imported so far. Once I am more comfortable using the program I will begin importing the remainder of my photos, (many, many thousands) which I currently still view and edit using Picasa. At that point I may want to rename many, if not most, of them. Doing the renaming during the import process seems to make sense at this point. Over the years my photos have been taken with a variety of cameras and thus have a variety of filename conventions. I do, however have them sorted in folders by year and month so some kind of date based naming scheme would seem to be the best. For that many photos I would prefer to do a direct import from my hard drive rather than move them to an external card first. I will do more research and thinking before I begin that task. PS:I have a couple of questions about Picasa files and processes, relating to preparation of files for import into Photoshop. Since I am now a member of this community is there an appropriate forum for these questions? I promise not to whine (much) about having to leaving Picasa!

Thanks Greg, yes I am aware of that. That is what prompted my original question, otherwise I would just do renaming in Windows Explorer. BTW, I have tried the "Process multiple files" menu in PSE Editor (as Peru Bob suggested) and I can only get it to create copies of files with new names, not rename the original file. So I went back to the organizer and I am having success with the "File>Rename" function. It will allow me to select just the files I want and then it will replace the original file name with a new "common name" followed by a sequential number. It also seems to maintain the original sort order when renaming, so that is good. I have done several folders now and I think it will serve my purpose.

Greg, I have several reasons to want descriptive and sequential names for photo files within folders. The primary one is to maintain the original location and order of scanned photos removed from old albums. (To enable me to easily find the original hard copy in the future, if necessary) I started scanning old photos almost 10 years ago and did not pay much attention to filenames in the beginning, now I want to retroactively commonize my filename structure so individual photo files will be identifiable by filename even if the original file has been moved or copies have been exported and shared with others. I do use tagging and albums within Photoshop and it works well...as long as I am working in Photoshop. Secondly, I previously invested a lot of time and effort using Picasa only to have Google discontinue supporting it, which can only mean some day it will not work at all. I used Picasa face tags and albums as my "structure", neither of which can be exported, so all that work was lost! That is why I am switching to Photoshop and also why I want a robust file and folder naming scheme, in case I have to move on again.

Hello, I am quite new to Photoshop but not to computers. I am running PSE15 on a windows 10 computer. I am switching from Picasa to PSE 15, so far so good. My question: I have thousands of photos already within an existing file structure. I would like to totally replace the original filename for each file in a folder with a base name that represents the folder it resides in followed by a sequential number and I would like to do it as a batch process, one folder at a time, from within PSE 15. Is this possible? A google search turned up many references to a Photoshop menu item called "Process multiple files" in PSE 12 and earlier, and it sounded like just what I needed but I can not find that menu in PSE 15. Was it removed? Replaced with something else? Am I just missing it? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
