Thanks, I unchecked the Preview Bounds option and now the resizing seems ok. So why would this affect my resizing? If I specify I want 30cm width and then Illustrator changes what I input to 30.006 what possible use is that?

I have a really strange resize problem. Everytime I resize an object or object Illustrator seems to be snapping to some imaginary grid. I have turned off all snapping options I can find. However if for example I resize an object's height to 30cm with constrain proportions turned off it still changes the width??? If I turn on constain proportions and try again to resize the object's height to 40cm it will change the setting to 39.273 mm??? What the heck is going on?

Thanks everyone for amazing responses. I ended up using a combination of Barbara's transform method and pixxel schubser's symbol editing trick. Works a treat!

Thanks, that's more or less what I am doing already, the problem with this method is then editing them is a massive pain, I guess I could add each flag as a brush. Will give it a go. Cheers.

I'm trying to replicate something similar to this, with flags going around the outside of a circle, but is there an easy way to do it using a brush or something? thanks

I have created a black rectangle behind the object, that's the problem, the transparency shows through that too. I'm using CC 2017, I've tried all the different ways, placing, linking, opening. Photoshop saved the png with transparency, I've tried all the different ways of saving it here too. To illustrate here's a screenshot. You can see how the transparent areas cut through everything instead of showing the black background.

When I place a png with transparent background into Illustrator the transparency knocks out everything behind the image, but I want the transparent areas to show the black background behind the image, but the transparency goes through this too, what is going on?

just to add, I have now managed to set the baselineShift and TRACKING char by char, but not the kerning, so I can now control the spacing betwen chars in someway. Maybe this is by design that kerning cannot be done char by char, although it would make more sense the other way round, set tracking on whole string then set kerning char by char.

I tried this... function test() { var doc = app.activeDocument; doc.textFrames[0].textRange.characterAttributes.kerningMethod = AutoKernType.NOAUTOKERN; var countDigits=doc.textFrames[0].textRange.characters.length; for(i=0; i < countDigits; i++) { doc.textFrames[0].textRange.characters.characterAttributes.kerning=50; doc.textFrames[0].textRange.characters.characterAttributes.baselineShift=1; } } does nothing to the kerning, but the baselineShift works. Am I doing something wrong?

I am trying to set the kerning between chars in Illustrator. Here's my script: var countDigits=refGrp.textFrames[0].textRange.characters.length; for(i=0; i < countDigits; i++) { refGrp.textFrames[0].textRange.characters.characterAttributes.kerning=50; } But it doesn't work. refGrp is defined earlier. Any ideas?

I'm sure this is simple but how can I get and set the .left and .top settings for an object in mm?

I have found a workaround .If I create the pdf in Illustrator selecting the colour space profile for my printer the colours then appear very odd in acrobat, but when I print with 'print as image' select the colours are correct and the prints are good. I also tested printing direct from Illustrator and the prints are not as crisp as this method.

If I print normal stuff from Acrobat it's fine on the eye, but get out the eyeglass and examine closely very very fine lines (which is what I do daily) and they are more jagged if I don't select 'print with image'. No idea why. My inkjet isn't a postcript printer, it's a Canon MG7750, which I have been using for about a year with this workflow.

I have a particular scenario where I am creating pdfs from Illustrator that I then print using the 'print as image' setting in acrobat. through trial and error i have found that this setting gives the best 'quality' for very tiny details on a canon inkjet. i recently bought a colormunki photo to better match the colours on the printer, however it seems I cannot use color management AND 'print as image'. is there any way around this? thanks.
