P: Camera Raw: Canon EOS R5 with RS 24-240 f4-6.3 IS USM Lens File Handling

Both Photoshop and Lightroom Classic seem to have difficulties handling the RAW image (.CR3) files from my Canon EOS R5 with RS 24-240 f4-6.3 IS USM lens, primarily when I am using that lens at 24mm focal length.  Both the Adobe apps show significant distortion in the images and still have quite noticeable distortion even after using optical correction using Adobe's lens profiles.  I have my camera set up to produce both the RAW (.CR3) files as well as .jpg versions.  The Canon .jpg files do not show any of the distortion that I see in both Lightroom and Photoshop.  When viewing the RAW (.CR3) files in Canon's Digital Photo Professional they also do not have the distortion seen in Lightroom and Photoshop.

I could provide copies of a sample RAW file along with .jpg files from the camera and generated from Photoshop both with and without the optical lens correction if you would like to see what I am talking about.

Thanks

Hi

I apply automatic lens correction to my imports.

Seemingly randomly (or perhaps with "fussy" subjects, eg trees) i am getting artefacts on the imported raw file. I attach an example - the embedded preview is fine, and my camera screen shows no issue, but as soom as i go into develop mode these artefacts appear.

I also attach my import settings which are at default.

Canon EOS R6, 24-240 RF Lens, firmwares up to date, LRC Version10.4 [ 202108071231-af9219b9 ], Mac OS Big Sur 11.5.2 on Mac Mini (M1 chipset)

Thanks for any help in anticipation

This is a disk recording issue in camera.  You may be able to format out thebad places in the disk, so do a full format on that disk in camera.  A good practice is to never delete images from disk in camera because it can cause issues like this.  Always reformat disks prior to a shoot to work with good media.  If for some reason you still see this problem afterwarsd, toss this disk and rplace it with high quality media.

Greetings,

Updates to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products for Desktop, Mobile and Web, were released today and contain a fix for this issue.

Please refresh your Creative Cloud application and install your update when it becomes available. Thank you for your patience.

Thanks, I've logged an issue with the Camera Raw team for investigation.

Good Idea - didn't think to do that.

The link is https://1drv.ms/u/s!As7KXcYcQDH4hPQUtpk7LlpDRvbmoA?e=CdcUhC

The xxx.CR3 is the original RAW File.  I also have 4 jpgs in this folder, "Camera jpg" is the jpg created by the EOS R5, the "xxxCanon_DPP4" is a jpg created by Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 with no additional adjustments, the "Photoshop.jpg" file is created by Photoshop 2020 from the RAW file with no adjustments, while the "Photoshop_Optics_Profile" file uses Photoshop's optical profile for the particular lens used.  This obviously corrects much, but not all of the distortion.  As can be seen, the Canon software clearly handles the distortion correction much better than Photoshop.  I would hate to have to rely on the Canon software, but it does seem to handle the distortion better than Photoshop (or even LightRoom).

This is only one sample RAW file.  I get the same type and level of distortion for all the images shot at 24mm with this particular lens and camera.  I am puzzled why Canon Digital Photo Professional can handle this distortion properly while Photoshop and Lightroom does not handle it as well.

Thanks
