P: Denoise results in a checkerboard pattern (CR & LrC)

I noticed that in some photos enabling Denoise results in a checkeboard-like pattern, there are very distinct tiles. This is shown in the following photo:

      Hi, I’m getting severe checkerboard and rectangular tile artifacts in my skies whenever I use AI denoise on my Mac running Lightroom 9.5.

      This happens on RAW files from both my Canon R6 Mark II and 90D. If I turn up the dehaze or clarity slider, the boundaries of these blocky processing tiles become completely obvious (see attached screenshot). Toggling denoise off makes them disappear completely.

      Turning off GPU acceleration in the preferences doesn't fix it. Has anyone else seen this, and is there a fix?

      Is this a Mac only problem?

      On my Windows 11 PC I get this with Denoise at 75, Reflection Remove and the Adaptive Color profile:

       

       

      No patchwork/checkerboard.

      Adding a data point that I think matters: this is still present in Lightroom Classic 15.5 with Camera Raw 18.5. The reports above are on 15.4.1 / ACR 18.4.1, so the August 2026 release has not fixed it.
       

      System: Apple M2 Max, macOS 26.5.2 [25F84], Lightroom Classic 15.5 [202607291506-b8869fa7], internal Camera Raw 18.5 [2673], graphics processor preference Auto.

      Camera: Leica D-Lux 7, .RWL. That adds a third manufacturer alongside the Canon and Nikon reports here, and a small-sensor compact rather than a full-frame body, so it does not appear tied to a particular sensor or raw format. The file is ISO 100, 1/640 s, f/8 - a base-ISO frame that barely needs noise reduction at all.

      Measurements from a full-resolution export (4928 x 3288): the grid is roughly 700 to 800 px per tile and runs edge to edge across the whole frame. The seam steps are only about 0.1 to 2.7 levels out of 255, which is why they stay invisible until something stretches local contrast. My frame is an aerial photograph over open water, and Dehaze at 100 is what makes them obvious.

      On the question of what image content triggers it: in my case it is the large, smooth, low-contrast areas - open water and clear sky. The same frame shows nothing over land, where texture hides the steps.

      Isolation test. I exported the same frame four times to establish which tool bakes the grid in:

      1. No AI tools applied: no grid.
      2. Denoise only (amount 75): grid present.
      3. Distraction Removal with Reflections only: no grid.
      4. Denoise plus Distraction Removal: grid present, seams more pronounced.

      So Denoise alone is sufficient, which matches what has been established above. Distraction Removal makes the existing seams more pronounced but does not create them.

      On the open question of whether a workaround exists: for this kind of image, simply not using Denoise is not viable. On the un-denoised raw, Distraction Removal with Reflections classifies the entire hazy scene as a reflection and strips out all ground detail, leaving flat blue water. Denoise is effectively a prerequisite for Reflections to segment a hazy aerial correctly, so the two cannot be traded off against each other.

      Since the June 2026 update I have been plagued with giant squares developing on the sky portions of my photos when applying the denoise feature. I primarily edit on my mac that is operating macOS Tahoe  and understand that this has been a reported issue but I’ve gone as far as buying a new camera to find a solution for this since it does not seem to be a priority to be fixed and I can not find a way to fix this on my end. I shoot with Canon products and edit with canon raw images and this problem has been super frustrating. This is an issue on both lightroom platforms too.

      I suspect ANE, which has been enabled for ACR 18.4.x to be the culprit, as I believe this started happening around this update.

      Related to the entry in the Lightroom Classic Known Issues page ("Denoise can produce large, blocky, rectangular artifacts... observed on some Apple silicon systems with macOS 26"). Reporting here because I am reproducing it in Camera Raw via Photoshop, not Lightroom Classic.

      SUMMARY
      AI Denoise output contains a regular grid of rectangular regions offset in brightness from their surroundings. The artifacts are not visible at normal viewing, but appear immediately under strong contrast/equalization adjustment.

      STEPS TO REPRODUCE
      1. Open the attached NEF in Camera Raw (via Photoshop / Bridge).
      2. Apply Denoise at default settings. Open the file in Photoshop.
      3. After opening apply the equalization filter to bring out the artifacts.
      4. Rectangular blocks become visible in a regular grid pattern.

      Frequency: Every time.
      Determinism: The pattern of squares is not deterministic, it changes each time

      WHAT I HAVE RULED OUT
      - Memory pressure: reproduced on a freshly rebooted machine with only Photoshop running, memory pressure green, swap near zero. Same artifacts.
      - Not display-only: artifacts are baked into the resulting denoised file and survive export.
      - GPU driver troubleshooting is not applicable — Apple Silicon, drivers ship with macOS.
