P: Enhance Details causes cut out colored squares

I was trying out the new Enhance Details function on Lightroom 8.2, and it is working well on some images, but on other images, it creates the new file, but totally messes it up by cutting out a square in one part of the image, and then other green, blue and magenta squares of the same size are placed randomly in other parts of the image.

This doesn't happen on all files (and it isn't consistent as to which files...two shots taken minutes apart with the same camera and lens, and one it won't process correctly, but the other it will.  If it messes up on a file, it always messes up in the same way if you try again. It doesn't matter whether GPU processing is enabled or not.

I see the same "patchwork quilt" problem on my old iMac. I tried test charts from DPReview from the Fuji X-T1 and X-T3. Files from bayer sensor cameras were fine.

I believe that Core ML falls back to using the CPU if the GPU is missing the necessary functions. It seems that the CPU version of the X-Trans algorithm has a bug in it. I guess that each of the coloured tiles in the final image is from a separate task handed to a thread on the CPU.

I have double checked my GPU and its a Sapphire Radeon HD 7950. In system information, this card supports metal.– Metal – supported, feature set Mac OS GPUFamily1 v3.  However, I have not yet upgraded to 10.14. Should this card work for LR and enhance details?  Later this week, I'll go to 10.14 and check LR again.  Thanks.

I have the X-T2 as well and see exactly zero difference...

i also had issues on my 2015 MacBook Pro and i updated it to 10.14 and tested Lightroom Classic. 2 of 3 images that I used "enhanced details" on converted as they should. The .raf files took 3 minutes.  One file had black boxes but that was the first one that I tried. Seems ok.  There is a definite difference between the .raf file and .dng file. All to the good. Now, i will pursue upgrading my Mac Pro (2012) with a new video card and OSX10.14. Thanks.

I am considering upgrading my video card in the Mac Pro -Radeon RX 580 8GB GPU
for Mac Pro (2010-2012) .  This should provide the "metal" capacity and faster open CL.  I will, then, update my OSX to 10.14.  Do you think that this might improve my performance for this issue. Of course, I know you cannot guarantee improved performance.

The source raw file is averaging 28MB.
This yields enhanced detail DNG files of 66 to 117MB!

The GPU on mac mini might be under powered. How many megapixels are your source raw photo?

Yes , thank you Simon. I updated to OS Mojave and now no more black rectangles. However it took over 4 minutes to generate the DNG-enhanced file. This is with my late 2014 Mac Mini with 2.6 ghz Intel Core I5 with 16 GB RAM.

If your GPU card is more recent models (like Nvidia Pascal class or later), the issue would likely be fixed by a future driver update... Adobe might have to be aggressive in blacklisting unsupported older GPU models in the future.

Try update to the latest macOS 10.14.3. That would likely help.
