P: Forces All WebP Files to Open in ACR With No Way to Disable

Camera Raw 18.2 forces all WebP files to open in ACR. Version 18.1.1 did not support WebP, so Photoshop opened them normally. Now there’s no way to disable WebP handling.

Please add a toggle.

Problem solved for me (March 7th) thanks to updating to ACR version 18.2.1. WebP files now open directly in Photoshop without needing Camera Raw. Thank you.

Camera Raw 18.2.1 is now available in the Creative Cloud App. It contains a fix for this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by pressing  [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

@Rikk Flohr_Photography wrote “Camera Raw 18.2.1 is not available”

Rikk, is this a typo where you meant “now” instead of “not”?

For the love of God Adobe fix this egregious error that you have forced on us. It has completely crippled and  destroyed my entire workflow for app dev.

Its one additional click, on the Open button in Camera RAW. Simple.

Not accurate, requires two click for multiple files, select all, open, it disrupts automation and scripts, and it creates sidecars that have to be cleaned up. Multiply that by by 50 times per day for a 10-hour session of app development work.

The newest update of Camera Raw in Ps (18.2) automatically handles all .webp files. It also automatically creates .xmp files every time you open a .webp in Ps.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to disable this. Is there a way that doesn’t involve using a previous version to make it so Camera Raw doesn’t handle .webp files?

This majorly slows down my workflow, and is a totally unnecessary feature that nobody asked for.

For years I could right click a webp file in Windows and select Open With Photoshop and the file would just open in photoshop. Not anymore.  Now that same file opens in Camera Raw instead, adding unwanted and unnecessary steps, and files.  I do not need a .xmp for a webp file.

    This just started happening today.

You can go back to the previous way the webp files were handled by downloading a previous version of camera raw https://adobe-camera-raw.en.uptodown.com/windows/versions or https://adobe-camera-raw.en.uptodown.com/mac/versions

This has been bug reported, acknowledged and passed on to engineering.

What’s missing is an option in Camera Raw preferences to disable webp support, just as there is for tiff, jpeg, jpeg xl and avif. It’s probably coming in a future update.

People are adding to the thread because something that worked previously without any issues is now broken. People are going to continue to post about it until it’s fixed, that’s how comment sections work. Saying “It’s *probably* coming in a future update” is not helpful or even reliable.

Goto this forum link for same question.

Note: Photoshop already has the option to open, or not,  TIFF and JPG files in ACR.   [Preferences > Camera Raw > File Handling > File Format Handling]

The change is possibly linked to the recent updates for Lightroom and Lightroom-Classic that can now work with WebP files.
