P: Lost Windows Vista 64bit taskbar after upgrade to Camera Raw 6.4

After upgrading to Camera Raw 6.4, when I have it open I cannot view my windows taskbar. I have "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" checked under Taskbar and start menu properties dialog box. With the earlier version of Camera Raw I was able to toggle between various applications using the taskbar while camera raw was open.

Please advice.

Thanks.

I will create a separate topic for the Photoshop CS5 menu problem.

However, the problem of the ACR Window flowing into the Dock or Taskbar remains unresolved on both Windows and Mac (as related above). It seems to me that the method of switching between window and applications is yet another issue which is not really related to one of window sizing.

I reiterate, if this works in previous versions of ACR why not in the current version/ ? Surely this is a simple issue to fix ?

Forgive me for offering my opinion, but this really is such a very basic issue which Adobe should never have allowed through its quality control.

See the explanation from the Camera Raw team above. In terms of the menus being too long, it would help to have that as a separate topic. OS X shouldn't allow menus to flow off the screen. It should add scroll carrots to the top and bottom of the menu to access long menus. When you create a new topic, it may help us to see a screen shot of what you're seeing.

Overlong Menus
Compared to CS4 two of Photoshop CS5’s menus (Edit and Layers) have ‘lengthened’ so that they no longer fit on the screen of my MacBook Pro. Thus, the bottom of the menu is off the bottom of the screen (or the top, if you are at the bottom of the menu). Now, it is true that the Edit menu of CS5 has two more items (32 instead of 30) but the Layers menu has the same number (29 items) as CS4. In CS5 all the menu text items are more widely vertically spaced, leading (pun not intended) to this problem on a MacBook Pro.

ACR Disappearing Into the Dock
And using Adobe Camera Raw has a similar problem in that the the ACR window disappears into the Dock at the bottom of the screen. Now I've read Jeff Schewe's response to this in another post but removing the Dock is not necessarily a solution for us all, and doesn’t help the CS5 menu problem. Seems to me to be sloppy design.

The screen resolution of my MacBook Pro is set to the native 1280x800, greater than the Adobe “minimum” and at their “recommended” screen resolution (see the CS5 ReadMe).

The clincher here is that this does not happen with CS4 nor ACR 5.7. If the display of menus and the ACR window can work correctly with these two applications why not with CS5 and ACR 6.6 ?

This is certainly a bug which needs fixing.

The Alt-tab or the Windows logo key+D both seem to provide an alternative for the lack of function of the F key, but it doesn't minimize the Camera Raw window.

Thanks MTSTUNER. Anyone else have feedback I can provide the Camera Raw team based on my query above?

Yes, that works fine. It instantly minimizes all open windows, and I can choose an application I want to work with from the taskbar.

Thanks.

Do you have better luck if you use the Windows logo key+D?

You are correct in guessing the source of frustration, its a pain to use alt+tab while working simultaneously on couple of other applications and batch processing files in camera raw.

I tend to work in batches of 10 files under camera raw, and while the save operation is in process (can take a few seconds to couple of minutes based on what I have done to those 10 files) I would like to switch to non adobe application. Previously just clicking on the relevant tab from the visible taskbar was just one click away. Whereas now with using alt+tab, operations sometimes hangs temporarily, given time I get my alt+tab options but that defeats the purpose of switching back and forth seamlessly and making optimum use of time.

For me on windows the Alt-tab key doesn't work. I have to use the Windows key to bring up the the taskbar and start menu.

Even though i don't have the problem because i can run a much higher resolution, i have noticed that this only seems to be a problem at a screen resolution of around 1366x768 or 1024x768. If i set an even lower resolution of say 1280x720, then the camera dialog is normal as below, but 1024x768 does result in the fullscreen button missing.

I guess other users might see different results than i.

Added: I should say the alt-tab works with windows 7 and vista, but not on windows
xp which is os i was working on at the time of the above screenshot.

I've talked with the Camera Raw engineers. The change where Camera Raw 6.5 forces full screen mode and removes the UI (button and F key) for fullscreen mode was intentional to fix other bugs with Camera Raw and small screen usage. Previously, Camera Raw could come up with some of its UI obscured by the OS X dock or Windows Taskbar on small screens, which also generated many bug reports from users.

We realize that some users are confused and/or unhappy with this intentional change – and the Camera Raw team is of course willing to consider usability improvements here but we'd like to have a better understanding of the frustration.

We're guessing the primary frustration occurs when something is needed from the taskbar or dock.

If that's the case, how many of you use the shortcut cmd-tab (Mac) or alt-tab (Windows) to go back to the system UI (OS X Dock and Windows Taskbar) when you need to access to them?

Does knowing this shortcut help with gaining access to the OS X Dock and Windows Taskbar while Camera Raw is open?

Are there other problems besides access to the Dock and Windows Taskbar?
