P: Show Autofocus Points feature not working in Camera Raw 18.5 for Nikon D850 or D500 raw files

Adobe Camera Raw 18.5

This problem occurs on both Nikon D850 and D500 raw files which have been opened in ACR by right clicking on the files in the Mac finder and selecting open in photoshop.  The files have not been previously processed in any way.

When I right click on the image in Camera Raw, the option for “Show Autofocus Points” is greyed out and not responsive.  I have repeated this with multiple files from both cameras taken using different autofocus modes.

I have checked two of the files (one D500, and one D850) in Raw Digger to examine the EXIF data, and both show values for “Focus Position” (0x11 on a D500 file) and “AF Points in Focus” (E9 on the same file), so this metadata information should be available to Camera Raw.

Are these cameras supposed to be supported by this feature?  Adobe’s documentation says nothing about what cameras are supported.

I watched a video today showing someone using this feature (although with a different camera’s files), so I know that I was looking at the right menu option.

Thank you.

Thanks. I have the file and will forward to the Camera Raw team.

    Rick,

I also tested the same file on a Windows PC - as far as I know it’s up to date (Windows 11 release 25H2, PS 27.9.1, and ACR 18.5).

Same issue as on the Mac:  The menu item to show focus points is in the menu but disabled.

The file is D13_2483.NEF which I attached above yesterday.

    Thanks,
    Don

    Greetings,

Are you able to provide a sample file which exhibits the issue for engineering to review?

Yes - this is an unmodified raw file (25.6MB) from a Nikon D500.

To repeat the problem:  right click on the file in Mac finder, select open in Photoshop (which opens Camera Raw).
In ACR, the “Show Autofocus Points” option is greyed out in the right click menu (I see the option but cannot select it).

I am still running MacOS Sonoma (14.5) with Photoshop 27.9.1 and ACR 18.5.
I see the warning about running Photoshop in an older release than 15.6.1, but everything else I do in PS & ACR works and I can’t imagine this being an OS Version-dependent feature.

Unfortunately the feature isn’t in LRC yet, so I can’t test it there.

I opened the file in RawDigger and displayed the EXIF and filtered on the word “focus”, yielding (slightly formatted including bolding the key lines).  According to the camera’s back display, this focus point is just above the bird’s head:

    Focus Mode: AF-C
AFC Priority Selection: Focus + Release
Number Of Focus Points: 55 Points
    Focus Point Wrap: No Wrap
Multi Selector Shoot Mode: Select Center Focus Point (Reset)
Command Dials Change Main Sub: Autofocus Off, Exposure Off
AF Point Illumination: On During Manual Focusing
    Store By Orientation: Focus Point
Lens Focus Function Buttons: AF Lock Only
    Sub Selector: Focus Point Selection
    Focus Position: 0x11
    Focus Distance: 47.32 m
    AF Points In Focus: E9
    Auto Focus: On

There are also a few EXIF fields containing “AF” but not Focus” that I haven’t pasted.  Here are two key ones:
AF Area Mode: Single Area (in the Exif but not visible when filtering by single
    AF Points Used: E9
    AF Points Selected: E9
Primary AF Point: E9 (Center), etc.

    Thank you!
