Changing the font in the Glyph panel updates Character toolbar, but then doesn't reflect correct font when changing selection.

First, can I just say that this bug form is a mess. If I want to edit the title of my post, it loses the content I have been laboring over for the last hour. You end up getting the shorter, less effective description because I have to start all over. Please fix this.

Changing the font in the Glyphs panel will only display the icon font if the text object is empty. If there is text in the text box, selecting Font Awesome in the Glyphs panel shows a blank.

Also, when I return to the workspace and drag-copy a previously defined text object, select the text tool and begin editing the text, the Character field in the main toolbar says “font awesome” though it clearly is not font awesome.

I have the type tool active and the word Reference Point selected, but the Character menu above says FontAwesome even though it’s not

Hello @Jason Burnett this is a new platform and I have faced this issue myself. Thank you for reporting this, I’ll pass it to the platform team.

A couple of follow-up questions to help us investigate:

    1. Could you share your Illustrator Beta version number and OS?
    2. Does this happen with other fonts in the Glyphs panel, or is it specific to Font Awesome?
    3. Could you share a small video of the issue?

Thanks for your reply. I didn’t get a notice, and I apologize for the delay.

    1. 30.518 beta
    2. only happens with Symbol or Icon fonts that don’t have the default character set defined (see note below)
    3. I’ll try to catch this on video and post back.

Note: Icon or symbol fonts that don’t define the main character set are a problem for both the Glyph Panel and the Font selector in the extended toolbar. Often, when a client wants to look at other fonts, I like to scroll through the list of fonts that I have (which is pretty extensive) and let them look over my shoulder as the fonts are applied to a sample in real-time. I can highlight the font name in the font field and use the arrow keys to scroll down the list, updating the text as I go. But when I reach a font that doesn’t provide the right characters, rather than rendering them as squares and allowing me to move on to the next font, it breaks the scrolling entirely.

Also, if you create a new text block, it adds the placeholder text, which prevents you from selecting a font in the Glyphs panel that doesn’t have those characters defined. Since Font Awesome uses an alternate character set, I can’t use it without deleting the placeholder text. The Glyphs panel should update regardless of whether it can generate the characters I have selected---they should render as squares, letting me know they are undefined.

I think this is why the Fonts field in the extended toolbar at the top doesn’t update. Because it thinks it can’t render the type in the alternate character set. This would apply to any font that doesn’t define the standard characters. I’ll try to catch this on video and post back.
