Illustrator file when placed inside another Illustrator file, opacity mask is ignored

I've create a vector logo that uses 2 opacity masks to prevent vector objects from touching. When placing that logo inside an Illustrator layout, it seems to ignore the layer masks completely, showing the underlying masked areas instead of hiding them.
