I have been researching this problem, and I have hit a wall. We are using ancient TCS 5.0, and we are still generating and CHM files, which various web searches claim "have been decprecated," but it turns out they really haven't, except in Microsoft Dynamics, which we aren't using -- sorry for the ramble. Anyway, the following variety of error messages pop up when I click on a link to our company's WEB page from our CHM file -- It doesn't happen on every PC. Sometimes it looks like this: Sometimes it looks like this, which requires me to End the task in Task Manager: For now, we are removing these links from the CHM, but keeping them in the soft copy PDF version. I have been tasked with researching what "replaces" CHM, and how it will work with our context-sensitve help links (map IDS in the code). Suggestions? Thanks

Thanks Matt -- I apprecate the offer--and I would love to take you up on it, once some issues above my head get resolved. When you say "hourly," what do you charge, or would you be doing this out of the kindness of your heart? 😁

I have been using a fairly ancient version of TCS that includes Frame 12 and RoboHelp HTML 11 for more than a decade now, and though I purchased a monthly subscription to the latest version (2020, I believe), I am terrified of the time-suck involved in converting, and what if things don't work? I am talking about 1600-page user guides developed in Frame and then LINKED in RoboHelp 11 for context-sensitive HTML help. These are complicated documents with lots of conditional processing, cross references, cross-document links, etc. I know how to do this in ancient TCS, but when I opened up the latest version I was COMPLETELY lost. I need to estimate the time involved, as well as get approval from the boss before diving in, or I need to just cancel the subscription and keep my stone tablet. Suffice it to say, I need some serious advice, and possible hand-holding here. Does Adobe Tech Support help with massive conversions like this with the subscription, or is this an extra charge? Is this something one of you kind community folks can help with?

I know this is an old post, but I am having this problem too, and NOTHING seems to have helped. I am using RoboHelp11, (As part of Adober Communication Suite 12) all updates/patches applied, I have the same symptoms described below with Search not working in WEB Help. I sometimes get "failed to inialize database" and/or "javascript (0), and null when I attempt a search. I too am missing whxdata/whfts_xml.js. Search works just fine in CHM files, just not WEBHelp. I am using Windows10, so the MSXML/ KB973688 and other MSXML 3/4 KB patches listed in another post in this forum do not apply (based on information to download them, windows 10 is not listed as a supported operating system--so I'm kind of afraid to try it). I have cleared the RH cache, created a new, small project, searched my computer for these files, uninstalled and reinstalled -- I have spent HOURS on the web searching for answers, and nothing works for me. Can anybody help?

Are there any known problems (with updates, please!) regarding creating a PDF from Framemaker 12 book file on Windows 10? None of the files in the book will save as a PDF -- no error messages; just nothing happens. I was able to create a PDF from a new document (not in the book) with no problem, but when I try Save As PDF to any files in the book, it creates a 0 bytes pdf file. Has anybody else seen this and/or have a solution? I had a chat session going, and then Chrome kicked me off. . .

Well, yes and no. The original folder is ALSO on my hard drive, and I wasn't connected to the network when the crash happened (either time). I guess I can change the mapping location on the server to a different location, but now I have 100-plus files that I have to clean up, and besides the amount of time I have already spent, I have no answer how this problem occurred or how to prevent it from happening again.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I created a new directory, copied all of the files and images from my big book into it and I was able to create a PDF and select all files View-->Conditional Text with no crash. The bad news is that I then copied the working files back into my original directory (which is under Source Code Control, so they need to continue living there), and tried it again, and I got the same damn crash with the same damn internal error message. So. . . now what?

not sure how to respond to both you and ArnisGubins, but thank you both for responding. I as able to fix the smaller of my two books by creating a new book file and importing the chapters into it. It didn't crash with Update Book. My other book has close to 100 chapters, so that will take a little longer, but I will post my results here.

Funny you should mention that, because another thing that was causing this same crash (last night) was selecting all the files in the book, and going to View-->Show/Hide Conditional Text. FYI, just tried what you suggested, and it crashed again.

Can anybody help? This has been happening for the past two days whenever I try to update a book. It seemed to crash when encountering a cross-reference, which I deleted, but it still thinks it is there and continues to crash. I sent the log file to fmerror@adobe.com, and I also found something in this forum that sounded similar, but there were no specific instructions on how to fix it -- something to do with structured versus unstructured? I am on Windows 7 Pro. Thanks!

I have found several questions similar to this re Cloud, but I am using Tech Comm Suite 5. Literally, every time I have to reboot my computer, I get a message that I have to register the product (Frame 12 and RoboHelp 11). This is really annoying, since Windows 7 regularly requires updates and reboots. Can any body help? Thanks

Hi Jeff, Thanks for the response and to the link to the old thread. I can't remember if I saw it or not, actually because I was under the (false) impression that the newer versionswould allow me to maintain source in RH, and import it to Frame when it was time to create a printed user manual. So I don't think I searched on anything this old. I haven't used Framemaker since the early 1990s, but from what I am reading, it sounds like we would have to maintain our documentation in Frame, and import it to RH when we want to create online help for our project. Perhaps I am stuck on the way we have been doing things for the past 7 years, but the online help, like the product code, changes frequently. It is not until just before the final version ships that our tech writers consider the RH source stable enough to convert it and create printed documentation. I see lots of information in the forums about going from Frame to RoboHelp, but not the other way. Our company purchased FrameMaker in order to avoid the extremely painful process of converting our online help source into a book using Microsoft Word, which works fine for books under a few hundred pages, but it is a nightmare for the 1600-page PDFs that we produce. Can anybody tell me if it is possible to import a project from RoboHelp10 to FrameMaker12?

Thanks Rick! That fixed the problem of the error pop-up during preview! The error that occurred in the CHM file I finally narrowed down to a single file -- whenever I clicked on a link to that file, the same HHComponentActivator message appeared. I had to copy the flat file content into notepad, delete all of the HTML code and reconstruct the file to make that error go away. I wonder if I had tried replacing the ehlpdhtm.js prior to that if it would have fixed the CHM problem too, but guess I will never know. In any event, thank you, thank you, thank you for the tip about ehlpdhtm.js! --Kat

Hi Rick, Yes, Community Help rocks! Just to recap: For 64-Bit machines, users can manually fix this problem by doing the following: 1. Copy hhactivex.dll to C:\windows\syswow64 2. From CMD prompt: c:\windows\syswow64>regsrv32 hhactivex.dll For 32-Bit machines: same thing -- just substitute system32 for syswow64 So here's another question for you related to this original post: Since several of our users and developers have had this problem, our developers want to incorporate this file and the registration of it into our product installation and product updates. From what they tell me, putting this into the installer is a no-brainer, but they use different (and apparently older), software for their frequent product updates. The update software does not distinguish between a 32bit and 64bit O/S, and it costs $$$ to upgrade it, so they have managed to work-around a lot of the problems. Do you or anybody else have any suggestions ?

I know this is an ancient post, but my users are having this same problem with the compiled CHM file that I gave them using RoboHelp 7. I can see the glossary on my PC (running XP), so I referred my users to the information I found re the hhctrl.oxc file, and I send them my copy of hhctrl.ocx file. I also noticed that there are several places out there to download one, but I don't know anything about these sites, and I'm not comfortable telling users to get the file this way. Here is what happened pasted from a user's email to me: Start > Run regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx produces [Window Title] RegSvr32 [Content] The module "hhctrl.ocx" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x8002801c. For more information about this problem, search online using the error code as a search term. I also tried the CMD prompt with the directories C:\, C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32. Same results. Please help! Thanks, --Kat

I have had one heck of a time with this problem, and with trying to find the answer. I wasn't even sure what to search for: I tried "Title Bar" "RoboHelp 7 CHM Title Bar," and I finally came across this post and the series of answers. I tried the following things: File->Project Settings (I changed the title in there, and generated the new CHM file. The old title persisted) Editing the rhwind.pfj file (same result) Logging out and back into the project (nothing changed) File->New->Window This was interesting. It showed two Windows, one called NewWindow and another called NewWindow1. Both of them showed the new title and even the left window showed the correct title, but for whatever reason, it didn't translate to the CHM file. On a lark I deleted all of the NewWindows and created a new NewWindow, deleted the Window Caption and retyped it in. Now it works! If that isn't user-hostile, I don't know what is.

Hi, my copy of RH7 has gone goofy too. I know this an ancient post, but I wanted to add to it because after about 20 minutes of searching through the forums I finally found an answer to the Insert Image problem in your post, so thank you! I have 2 existing help systems which I just put into Version control (integrating with Microsoft SOS). SOS expects the files to be in a location on my C drive that is several sub-directories deep. When I created a new help system in that same directory, Insert Image made me navigate all the way down to the images directory and then lost the file(no preview of it either). Also, the Insert Images dialog kept dumping me into "My RoboHelp Projects" directory under My Documents and looking for images there. I've never seen that before. I had to manually cut and paste the file name and its directory hierarchy into the Insert Image dialog. Then, when I checked the HTML page, it showed up w/ parent directories when what I really want is relative directories. Anyway, I now keep my new and working copies on my C: drive so I can insert image files again! When it's time to check into SOS, I'll move 'em over, I guess. So much for checking in works in progress!

Hi Z,
I too have suffered with this problem, and was never able to
find any one file that was causing it. I had a HUGE project that
compiled like a dream in RH 5, and failed with exactly the same
error you got after I upgraded it to RH 7. One of the things that
MAY have helped was moving my project to the root directory on C,
and simplifying its name. When it ran in RH 5, it was several
directories deep on my computer, and it never complained. RH7 seems
to like it better in C:projectname.
I too spent hours with Adobe support, sent them my files, and
they were able to re-create the problem -- then it mysteriously
disappeared for both them and me. Now I work on it, and every so
often I generate a CHM file after clicking my heels three times on
a day with a full moon, and praying to whoever will listen. So far,
it is still building, and I can only hope it will continue to do
so.
Good luck to you!

Hi AdamXT2, what a nasty bug this is -- you are right, it
doesn't seem to be related to any one thing, which is the worst
kind of bug. I spent a lot more time with Adobe, and then while I
was waiting for a response from them, I managed to "fix" it. I'll
tell you what I did, and then I'll post what Adobe suggested I do
next (though I didn't try it because for now, the problem is
fixed).
1. I copied the project into the C: drive
2. I deleted .cmd and .xpj files
3. I Opened file in RoboHelp X5 (yes, even though I was told
this couldn't be done, I was able to do it)
4. Generated unused files reports
5. Deleted 95% of unused files using Windows Explorer
6.Generated CHM files in RH5 with no problem using all
conditions (including NONE)
7.Realized I couldn't save files in RH5 w/ out crashing RH5
(at least it gave an error message before it died)
8.Opened the file in RH7 and let it "upgrade" project to RH7
9.Generated CHM file with Conditional processing set to NONE
successfully
10. Generated CHM file with Conditional processing set to NOT
Comment NOT Printed
successfully.
I have no idea why this worked.
I let Adobe know what I did. I haven't heard back from them
yet. Here is what they suggested I do:
1) Download the following file and convert it to Robohelp7.
Are you
having the same results when you try to generate the
Microsoft HTML
Help?
http://tinyurl.com/37acn8
> Kat < I haven't done this, but I tried other small
projects and they worked fine.
2) Remove any indexing intensive items in your help project,
like DOCs,
PDFs, FLV's or other non HTML items, and try to generate the
Microsoft
HTML Help.
>Kat< It's possible that removing the unused files
(there were a few .DOC files and lots of unused HTM and
GIF and JPG files) helped, but I don't know.
3) Try to cut up your project to troubleshoot individual
topics. Try
removing half of the topics and generate the help file, are
you getting
the same results?
<Kat> Never tried this; it would cause more broken
links.
4) Do other formats aside form Microsoft HTML cause the
issue?
<Kat> I was able to generate WEB help with no problem.
5) What about creating a new conditional build tag which
includes
everything does it happen as well?
<Kat> Tried that too; didn't work
In conclusion, I have no idea why it worked. I was actually
planning on going back to RH5, until I realized I couldn't' save
the project in it even though it let me open the project in RH5. I
hope the information I provided helps someone. This doesn't inspire
me with much confidence, but I have work to be done.

I just spent an hour on the phone w/ Adobe tech support Level
I. It got a little bit better. Now it just fails with a Fatal
Error: Microsoft HTML error message and creates a corrupt .CHM
file. Adobe has escalated this to Level II, after all the things we
tried (deleting and rebuilding the xpj and cpd files, generating
WebHelp, which worked, but I still need a CHM file) I'll let you

Harvey,
The symptoms I have are very similar, except the document
doesn't fail in the same place everytime. I DO get a TOC and an
index, and the TOC obviously doesn't include all of the chapters,
it goes from the failed file to the Index and Glossary. The
document always stops building chapters anywhere from page 475 to
page 525, and then builds the index and glossary, then cleans up
and finishes. Have you tested yours with MS Word 2000? It's not
really an acceptable fix, but I'm curious.
Thanks,
--Kat
P.S. Does anybody think this is worth posting to Adobe as a
bug and seeing if they can fix ir, or am I asking for
finger-pointing between Adobe and Microsoft?
