Hello, For me: 1. My monitors are set to the recommended resolution (2560x1440), and are also set to the recommended magnification (125%). 2. View > Zoom > Default or View > Zoom > Larger changes the size of the documents that are open, *NOT* anything in the UI. 3. The size of the UI (toolbars, icons, etc.) for all of the other applications I use on my work computer are fine. The UI of FrameMaker 2017 is too small. In my opinion, the ability to change the icon size—and having colored icons—was far superior in FrameMaker 12 than the method proposed in FrameMaker 2017 (which actually does not work for me).

I watched the video in the Tech Comm Tools reply, and I have the following observations: I don't want to change everything for all tools I use in Windows 10. The default icons for FrameMaker are the *only* ones that are microscopic by default. Over time my eyes relied on both color and icon shape to help me quickly find the icon I was looking for. The link "Make text and other items larger or smaller" does not exist in my version of Windows 10. (I would not use it anyway, because the icons in all other applications I use are fine.) All in all, the decisions made about icons in FrameMaker 2017 are an epic fail.

Ok, I found another forum discussion where someone suggested the following, and it worked. Blank Fields Adobe PDF Conversion Seetings Navigate here and copy all files: C > Program Files (x86) > Adobe > Acrobat 11.0 > Acrobat > Settings Paste them here: C > Users > [user name] > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Adobe PDF > Settings The top three drop-down lists on the Adobe PDF Document Properties window were empty. The steps above put selections in the top list (Default Settings). The next two are still empty, but I can create PDFs again. I would like to know how those files suddenly disappeared. I can assure you that I do not go spelunking in the Program Files (x86) folder and randomly delete files. Thank you to those who offered suggestions.

I am using FM 12.0.4 and Acrobat Pro 11.0.23, and used these tools to publish over 70 PDFs in September for a major release. Today, using the same FM files, I have the same issue as the OP, and see the same message in the Distiller. This is what I tried: 1. Tried to print to the Adobe PDF printer, and tried to Save As PDF. 2. Tried doing both methods from folders on a server or from folders on my local HD. 3. Tried using existing and new folders, for both source files and output files. 4. Deleted 12,000+ files from the %temp% folder. 5. Tried creating a PDF from two different books. 6. No illegal characters are in the file names. In fact, I created PDF from these files in September the way they are. 7. Cannot create a PDF of a single chapter of the books I maintain. 8. I have rebooted. 9. I made sure I took all Adobe Acrobat Pro updates. I still cannot create a PDF from FrameMaker files. I can, however, create PDFs from Word, Outlook, etc. On the PDF Setup window, I have nothing selected on the Tags and Links tabs. On the Settings tab, I use all default values. On the Bookmarks tab, and selected Generate PDF Bookmarks, and have Heading 1, 2, and 3 in Include Paragraphs. I have used all of these same settings previously with no issues. I would welcome any ideas. Thanks!

Thank you for the reply Bob and Barb. For Bob: I was taking the "pixel" thickness from the PDF (after viewing a screen capture of it in a graphics program), not from FrameMaker. The horizontal line originates from the Reference page. The same object (the 1 point horizontal line) on the Reference page produces three different thickness of horizontal line in PDFs when viewed on a monitor. For Barb: I think you are onto something. If I go to Preferences > Page Display > and deselect Enhance thin lines, Acrobat seems to make all lines the same. (They are appear to be blurry double lines, at 100% and at 150%.) The differences in line thickness definitely goes away. Selecting or deselecting Line Weights does not seem to do anything. It also does not seem to make a difference whether I select "For Monitor" or "For Laptop/LCD screens." For both: I was mistaken about the alternate PDF tool my company uses. When it opens the exact same files, the underscore looks perfect. By the way, I am using Acrobat 11. I think the issue has to do with the way Acrobat views line weights on a monitor. That is more information than I had previously! Thank you again!

We are using unstructured FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 platform. We have three uses for 1 pixel horizontal lines: table rows, underscores for hypertext, and horizontal lines on the top and bottom of notes, cautions, tips, etc. The one-pixel lines for the notes and cautions are maintained on the Reference page (like the horizontal line that separates footnotes at the bottom of the page, which we don't use). We also use conditional text. Right now we have five conditions—all indicated by a different color—not counting the default "black" that represents text that has a universal audience. Due to business reasons, we leave the conditional tags (colors) visible even in our published output. In all cases described in this post, we are viewing the PDF at 100% magnification. When we publish to PDF, this is what happens to the thickness of the 1 pixel horizontal lines: The hypertext underscores remain 1 pixel when for the black text with no condition indicator. However, the hypertext underscores for conditional text are *always* 2 or 3 pixels thick. If there are two hypertext links within the same blocked condition, the underscore for one of them might be 2 pixels thick, and the next one might be 3 pixels thick. If a hypertext link wraps around to the next line, the underscore might be 2 pixels thick on the upper line, but 3 pixels thick when it wraps to the next line. The horizontal lines that set off notes, cautions, tips, etc., usually publish to PDF as 2 pixels thick, regardless of whether or not it is conditionalized. The horizontal lines in tables do not seem to change in thickness. The thickness change indicated by the first two bullets happens regardless of whether we publish to PDF using Acrobat Pro, or using the other PDF tool that is preferred by our company. So, the issue does not seem to be a PDF tool issue. It seems to be the way FrameMaker hands off the content to the PDF tool. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know if there is a way to make these horizontal lines 1 pixel thick in PDF output? Thank you in advance!

I would appreciate a solution to this as well. I have a book that is less than 100 pages long, I publish it to Microsoft HTML Help, and the Search does not work. I use default settings in FM 12. Edit, new from here down: I was publishing from a server, so I tried moving all FM files to my local HD to see if it made a difference. It did not. Using all default settings in FrameMaker 12.04.445, when I publish to Microsoft HTML Help, performing a search on anything results in the outcome: No topics found. I have tested the search on many terms, and the result is always the same. The compiling process does not index the terms to make them searchable (or something). However, I get a "FrameMaker Console" window that says the following (and I have no idea what it means—it could be unrelated): MIF: "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP1\5-LearningObjectivesTYKs.mif" (16214): Value of Separation out of range (10). MIF: "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP1\5-LearningObjectivesTYKs.mif" (16336): Value of Separation out of range (10). MIF: "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP1\5-LearningObjectivesTYKs.mif" (16351): Value of Separation out of range (10). MIF: "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP1\5-LearningObjectivesTYKs.mif" (16366): Value of Separation out of range (10). MIF: "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP1\5-LearningObjectivesTYKs.mif" (16457): Value of Separation out of range (10). MIF: "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP1\5-LearningObjectivesTYKs.mif" (16472): Value of Separation out of range (10). MIF: "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP1\5-LearningObjectivesTYKs.mif" (16487): Value of Separation out of range (10). Any ideas would be appreciated. I need the output to be searchable. (If I publish to Responsive HTML5 or WebHelp, it is searchable. However, I need an output of one file.) Thanks, Tim

We are using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 64 bit system. Say someone created a paragraph style and misspelled its name. For example: Boddy Text instead of Body Text. What's the best way to fix it in the template, and then apply the change to dozens of chapters that use it? Way 1: Open each chapter and correct the misspelled paragraph style manually. Way 2: Fix it in the template, then use File > Import > Formats. The problem is that it adds the corrected style as a new paragraph style, and does not apply the new style to anything. So, all instances of the misspelled style would have the style with the corrected spelling applied manually. Does anyone have a third way to do it that automates the process? Thanks in advance.

I have a related question, now that reality has settled in and we are ready to publish. We have eleven modules in a training guide. Some of the content is tagged as "domestic only" (green color), some is tagged as "international only" (blue color), and some of the content is "instructor guide" only (gray color). We want the text tagged with "instructor guide" to stay gray, so it stands out to the instructor (the instructor needs to know what the students are, and are not, seeing). However, when we publish to PDF (or print a hard copy), we want the "domestic" and "international" content to be black like the rest of the generic content. There is no reason for it to be a different color in the published output. Does anyone know of a way to do this at the book level? Or do we have to go in and change the colors manually for each module prior to publication? Thanks again, Tim

Niels, thanks for giving some time to my question and trying to come up with an alternative. The solution you provide is not exactly what I attempted to explain, but we have pretty much given up on trying to pursue the format in the original post. So, we are discussing it, and might go in the direction you suggest. Thanks again.

We are using unstructured FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 platform (64 bit). We need to number questions in an FAQs section, that includes the "Q" in bold followed by a colon that is not in bold. This is what the new paragraph style needs to do: 1.[tab][bold]Q[Default ¶ Font]:[tab]What happens when XYZ? [tab][bold]A[Default ¶ Font]:[tab]This is what happens. We would like for the number and "Q:" to appear automatically and be formatted correctly with the new paragraph style, so all we have to do is type the question. (We would prefer not to use "Q##:" because it would require a unique indentation distance in the template.) The "A:" should also be indented and formatted correctly. Both the "Q:" and the "A:" would wrap around to the same indentation for long text strings. Can anyone provide the "building blocks" that can make this happen? Is this possible? I tried to search for the answer in this forum and on the Web. I apologize if this is answered somewhere already. Thanks in advance. Tim

We are using FM 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform. I have the same question as the original post. We have several conditional tags throughout all of our content. We plan on setting the condition to get the content we want prior to the final publishing process. HOWEVER, we want the conditional text to be totally transparent to our target audience. (Why should they see green, blue, and black text?) It sounds like there is no global way to hide conditional tags just prior to printing or saving to PDF. Is that correct? We are going to have to go into each and every chapter, deselect the "Show Condition Indicators" option, save the chapter, and then print or save to PDF? Then, when we go back to editing the content again, we have to return to each and every chapter and reselect the option? Thanks in advance for any response. Tim

Hello everyone, We are using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform. I have found discussions on the Web about this, but so far nothing works for us. As you know, other word processing tools have a hollow bullet as a standard feature. After spending a couple of hours over the past few months researching forums, it appears there is no way to get a true hollow bullet in FrameMaker. Is that correct? This is what does *not* work for us: A Courier or Courier New lower case letter "o" (oh). If we could raise it up off the line, it would work. There appears to be no way to lift a character a few pixels off the line. The symbol you get by pressing Alt+9: â—‹. When this symbol appears in FrameMaker, it is also needs to be raised up off the line so it doesn't look like the letter "o." The circular symbol you get when you type a lower case "m" and change the font to Windings 1, because it has shading on the lower right, and also would need to be raised up off the line. We know how to make any Winding or Webding a bullet. What we want is the standard hollow bullet. Can anyone explain how to do that? Thank you. Tim

We are using unstructured FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform. We create training guides that can be published to PDF as either "Instructor" or "Participant" guides. The content for the Instructor Guide is conditionalized, so we can hide it when we publish the Participant Guide. The color we have selected for the conditionalized text is dark gray, so the guide can be printed on a B&W printer and still do a fair job of distinguishing between instructor content and participant content. When we block a section of text to conditionalize it for the Instructor Guide, and it includes a table, FrameMaker puts gigantic gray borderlines within the cells of the table. Does anyone know of a way to remove those thick gray borderlines for the conditionalized table, but retain the gray conditionalization for the text? (We want the entire table to "hide" when we publish the Participant Guide, but we do not want the thick gray borderlines in the table for the Instructor Guide.) Thank you in advance, Tim

Thanks Arnis. I always author with the text symbols showing, so that was not the issue. However, today I made absolutely certain that the conditional tags started at the left margin, and ended after the end of the paragraph mark after the third numbered list paragraph, and it seems to be working. I honestly thought I had done that before, but your comment made me go back and look again. Thank you!

We are using FrameMaker 12 (unstructured) on a Windows 7 platform (64 bit). I have the following anchored frame and paragraphs that together form a block of conditional text: Small icon graphic in an anchored frame aligned to left margin. Body Text paragraph (this text runs around the small icon graphic) Body Text paragraph (this text is below the small icon graphic, aligned to the left margin) 1. List Num 1 paragraph (aligned against left margin) 2. List Num + paragraph (aligned against left margin) 3. List Num + paragraph (aligned against left margin) I block everything described above, and apply a conditional tag. When I hide the conditional text, 100% of the conditional text disappears, except: Tthe "1." that is part of the Autonumber format for the List Num 1 paragraph. (The text of the List Num 1 paragraph disappears as it should.) The anchor for the small icon graphic's anchored frame. The "1." and the anchor seem to be stuck to each other when I try to hide the conditional text. (They are separated by two paragraphs of Body Text prior to hiding the conditional text.) Anyone have any ideas about what is going on? Thanks in advance, Tim

We are using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform. I am working my way down a chapter of training content. I am halfway down the chapter, and—as fate would have it—I need to start a table at the top of a page. When I insert a table (with a caption/title at the top), FM creates an anchor at the top of the page. The space to the right of the anchor is a blank line. I actually want the table to start at the top of the page without the blank line to the right of the anchor. This is what I tried, with the results: I put the cursor after the anchor, and press Delete. Result: The text *below* the table is brought up above the table. I put the cursor after the last bit of text on the previous page, and press Delete. Result: The paragraph on the previous page moves down to the next page on top of the table, leaving a large blank space on the previous page. I change the Start option (on Table Designer) to Top of Column (or Top of Page). Result: FM leaves the anchor where it was, moves the table down to the next page, and leaves a totally empty page where the table used to be. Is there any way to just move the table up so that it is on the same line as the anchor? (And as a tool design issue, is there EVER a reason why a content developer would want an entire blank line above of a table?) Thank you in advance, Tim

I am not very familiar with Reference pages, but let me respond to your two questions. The "UnstructMasterPageMaps" table on the "MasterPageMaps" page has the header row in the table, and one totally empty row under that. But remember, the right page header is working fine, and even the "front" page (which has no header) is also working fine. What should be in that table? Your second question about Master Page Usage I answered in my original post. Both the right and left page are set to "Right/Left." Even if I manually attempt to set the left page to "Custom: Left," that selection is not retained. After I click Apply, I can immediately check Master Page usage again and it reverts back to "Right/Left." The right hand page does the same thing, but the header works anyway. Thanks again for your assistance.

We are using FrameMaker 12 (unstructured) on a Windows 7 platform. I have created a book whose structure looks like this: Book _____Cover _____TOC _____Chapter 1 _____Chapter 2 _____Etc. chapter We are trying to use the standard left and right running headers. The left header = Running H/F 1 = <$paratext[Title]> = Title in the "Cover" file of the book. The right header = Running H/F 2 = <$paratext[Heading 1]> = The chapter name in each "Chapter" file in the book. The right running header populates properly. The left running header is empty. This is what I have tried to troubleshoot: Verified that the title of the book in the cover file is set to a "Title" paragraph tag. (It is.) Saved each file/chapter and updated the book. Tried to force the even page header manually using Format > Page Layout > Master Page Usage, but it doesn't stick. The configuration on the Master Page Usage window is the same for even or odd pages: Use Master Page = Right/Left is selected. Apply To = Current Page # is selected, and Even and Odd are both selected. There is probably something simple I do not understand. Can anyone assist? Thank you in advance, Tim

Hello everyone, I am using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 SP1 environment. I am working on a training guide in FM. We are supposed to use .5" x .5" icons in the document as visual indicators to instructors on what is supposed to be happening in the training delivery (there are icons for questions, dialog, demonstrations, lab exercises, tips, etc.). I would like to put each icon graphic on the Reference Page, and set it to its own paragraph style. Then, on the Body Page, put the mouse pointer where I would like the graphic, click the icon's style, and have FM bring the graphic from the Reference Page and have it automatically aligned against the left margin with the runaround properties already set. Is there a way to do that? I am only a moderate FM user, so if there is a way to do this, please provide detailed steps. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Tim
