Question

Anyone here with Quad-Core (i5 or i7) Surface Pro 7

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there is anyone here with a Quad-Core (i5 or i7) Surface Pro 7 here?

The reason I'm asking is because I've been running some tests on Surface Pro 5 and Surface Pro 6 (just upgraded from 5 to 6) and the results were surprising:

I ran some tests in AE and PR using the same files and the same CC version, and I'd like to have a comparison with Surface Pro 7 to see if I'd gain anything if I were to get Surface Pro 7 instead of 6.

I can provide the files I used for anyone willing to help

All best,

Marek

The major difference boils down to the integrated graphics in those Surface Pro's. That Surface Pro 6 has been bogged down by its feeble-performing Intel UHD Graphics 620, versus the Surface Pro 5's Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640. And both Premiere Pro and After Effects, in their newer versions, have been increasing their reliance on the GPU performance.

That said, neither of those two Surface Pro's perform anywhere near as well as even a budget desktop PC or a more powerful laptop that sells for the same price as those Surface Pro's.

And the use of the lousy Intel UHD Graphics inside the Surface Pro 6 is an indication that Microsoft had jumped the gun on the quad-core Intel low-power mobile CPUs, as the i7-8650U used a Kaby Lake Refresh architecture, and Microsoft jumped on the quad-core low-power trend before Intel could release its Coffee Lake U CPUs with Intel Iris Plus graphics.

By the way, the Surface Pro 7 is powered by the 10 nm Ice Lake 10th-gen CPUs, with the quad-core i5 and i7 models now going back to using Iris Plus Graphics. Only the dual-core i3-powered Surface Pro 7 model uses Intel UHD Graphics. And now that the 11th-Gen 10nm mobile Tiger Lake CPUs are out, the Surface Pro 7 is now a bit outdated.
