Question

Biggest bang for the buck

Hi guys...I'm running a 1-year-old Dell Precision desktop with 32GB ram, an Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 graphics card with 24GB ram, I9 cpu, and 2 8TB HDs each about 15% used.

If I had $200-$300 hanging around, what could I upgrade that would give me the biggest performance improvement with PremierPro 2022? The performance processing multicam 4K videos is killing me

RAM?

2TB internal SSD?

Other?

Thanks

Have you implemented a backup strategy for your two 8TB media drives?

$200 to $300 could go toward software to clone the files on your media drives at regular intervals along with storage to clone it to.  Of course, how quickly you need to be back up and running in the event of a drive failure tends to dictate how you go about backing media files up.

Warren,

Perhaps I read Musicphotgrapher's post wrong but I think the concern is about his/her computer not performing that well with 4K video clips. If that is the main concern then buying backup drives is not going to solve the issues at hand. Perhaps the two 8 TB drives are mirrored and serving as a backup (not the best solution). All we can really do is wait for more information from Musicphotographer. That being said perhaps everything is working OK at this point.

I have liked having a benchmark to use pre and post upgrades. See Puget:

I'd upgrade the RAM to 64GB or 128GB.

Also, if you haven't done so already, review this Adobe support article that was upated Oct. 26, 2021:

Warren,

Are you sure the RAM is getting maxed out at 100% useage? Is his CPU at 30% useage? Is the GPU at 95% useage? Wouldn't the video codecs have an impact on system performance? The i9 can make use of Quick Sync but I am not sure if the Quadro series support Nvenc.

I am not even sure what video codec is being used. You can edit 4K H.264 wirh a single mechanical hard drive but BRAW, Pro Res and R3D files might drop frames. Mechanical hard drives in a RAID 0 setup will offer the best bang for the buck storage wise but I am not sure where the weakest link is. Perhaps you were sent a private message with a lot more information than what has been posted thus far. Having said that Musicphotgraphers computer should edit 4K just fine. The only thing I am not sure about is the Quadro 4000 GPU. Maybe there is a driver issue or something is miss configured. Running Windows Task Manager will help us find the weakest link. Perhaps it is the RAM.

That being said the old mediocre computer with only 16 GB of RAM in the video link below is editing 4K H.264 using Nvenc. It is also editng 4K R3D files, 4K Pro Res and 4 BRAW.

I also have a system with 32 GB of RAM that can edit 4K just fine. Should I upgrade to 64 GB? Do you see my point?

With $200-$300 to spend, I'd go with RAM.

My error...the Nvid card has 8GB...not 24GB

I thought 24GB sounded like to much. That being said you should run Windows Task Manager (as seen in the video below) to find the weakest link. I new hard drive setup might not make any difference.
