Buying a laptop for Premiere Pro and After Effects

Hi folks,

I am in the time consuming process of shopping for a laptop that can handle video editing and basic to medium After Effects tasks (not a professional). I need something reliable but not extremly expensive.

I've been eying:

1. A laptop that comes with a AMD Ryzen 7 3750H processor and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 GPU.

2. A laptop that comes with an Intel Core I7-9750H and NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650 4GB GPU.

Now, I've been researching a lot and sometimes all seems clear while at other times I just don't know what to choose.
Any advice is welcome. I am open to other options in regards to CPUs and GPUs as long as they are not the most expensive.

What should I prioritize for my usage? CPU or GPU?

    For premiere, gpu is a lot more important but if you do 1080P and 8bit color space (mostly web), than you are good with a GTX card doesn't matter.. TX1650 looks promising. If you think you will ever need playback resolutions more than 2K, go for the RTX 2060 (btw RTX wont accelerate adobe apps in any way. You should check GTX and RTX laptop rendering benchmarks to see bang for buck options..)

     

    For ae, "gpu is helpful but not important".

    • only handful of effects, like a basic "box blur" and some particle plugins use GPU acceleration.
    • for me a 1080P commercial project, 3D space and lots of blending operations a lot of expressions and 3. party plugins, with a RTX 2080TI, After effects utilizes only %5 of my gpu..


    You should go for high clock speeds and "minimum" of 4 core cpu, because there are too many cpu calculations that can happen, let's say you purchased that minimal transitions text effects bla bla template and thinking you can work on it, but those templates are so dependent on expressions engine, it's "workable" only if you have a decent cpu so..

     

    I'd say you should go for the best processor in your price range

    a GTX gpu is all you need,

    16GB ram is okay for most situations,

    and if you cache your timeline with a fast SSD (samsung t3 external, 500mbs read and write..)

    you are good to go..

    This is really good information. It matches my findings from the research that I have conducting. A really good CPU is still important in my case. Do you think Adobe will utilize more and more GPU power in the future?

    Hello Alex,

     

    If you want to use GPU acceleration, I recommend you choose one of NVIDIA video cards.
