Question

Can I run AE on this 'budget' build?

Hi there - I've been trying to get some answers to what kind of system I would need to run AE on other forums, but eventually realised I should come here. I'm going for my first build (rather excited about it), but I don't have mega-money to splash around. I'm going to be doing pretty basic stuff with AE - 2d animation for explainer videos, infographics, that sort of thing - so no heavy-duty video rendering. After a few changes, the system I have in mind is this:

  • i7 7700k 4.2ghz (originally went for a Ryzen, but I hear multi-coring isn't so important with AE these days so I switched to brute core speed - is this still correct, and likely to remain so?)
  • GTX 1050 ti, as I heard graphics card is not so important - think this will be sufficient?
  • Gigabyte GA-Z270 motherboard
  • 16gb (2x8) G.Skill Ripjaws V RAM - I know AE eats RAM for breakfast and many serious AE folks may laugh at such a low amount, but with the extortionate price of RAM right now... Do you think it will be sufficient for my (basic) needs?
  • 500gb 850 Evo SSD (started with a 950 Evo M.2, but folks told me the difference wouldn't be noticed)
  • 2TB Seagate Barracuda

What do you think, will she fly? Also, I've read some people recommending an extra SSD for cache, do you think this is necessary?

All help gratefully received, thanks!

Andy (:

I would reconsider the CPU take a look at the  AE benchmarking by Puget.  It may affect the cost on the motherboard but with an i7-8700K for only $20 more for the 6-core CPU you get much better performance.

I am not a AE person but from my Premiere Pro testing two SSD's are a better solution rather han a single SATA III SSD and a hard disk drive..  In Premiere Pro hard disk drives are only used for backup and archiving.

Thanks for that. I had seen the Puget list previously, and it scared the crap out of me - 64gb standard RAM? Max 512gb? Weeesh.

I considered the 8700x, but across the pnd here in Europe it'll set me back close to 100 euros more, plus change for a motherboard switch. Damn, this thing is becoming expensive...

I can bump up the RAM to 32gb without entirely bankrupting myself, do you think this is worth it?
