Question

External GPU + Premiere + MB Pro 13in 2018 = Faster machine?

Hello

I am curious if i have a 13in MB Pro 2.7 i7  16GB with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB (this is maxed out ver of 13in) and i am whole aware of limitations with 13in....and not interested in a 15 in- sorry

I am just wondering If i were to get an external GPU like : Sonnet eGFX Breakaway or Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Puck or Akito Node (reccos on best one for this is welcomed too)

If i had one of these hooked up to my machine would that take on the more intensive operations of encoding and exporting timelines?

thanks in advance for any advice given

That's a great question.  It really depends on which graphics card you go with inside the eGPU enclosure.

You may have already checked the recommended AMD and NVIDIA video adapters for GPU acceleration:

Adobe Premiere Pro CC System Requirements

You should get a good boost (10% to 15%) just by setting the general project setting for video rendering and playback to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Mettle)" on your MacBook Pro.

Any Effects and Transitions that show when you enable the "Accelerated Effects" badge should not only render faster (probably real time) and always at the best quality.

I guess the real question is how much performance difference is there between let's say a NVIDIA Quadro K5000 or a Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 6200?  I'd guess that that's less about speed and more about duration.  A more powerful GPU should be able to process more effects as you stack them for greater durations in your Timeline than a less powerful GPU.
