Hey guys,

I'd be happy about a short feedback to the following new build:

i9 9900K (5,0 to 5,1 GHz overclock)

Nocture Noctua D15s dual fan cooler
Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master Intel Z390 So.1151 Dual Channel DDR4

4 x 16 GB G.Skill Trident Z silber/rot DDR4-3200 DIMM CL14 Dual Kit

OS/Apps = 256 GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD

Media files = 1000GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2

Cache = 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2

Backup = 3000GB WD Black

EVGA GTX 1080 FTW Gaming Acx 3.0 8GB

Corsair 850 PSU

I'll be editing mainly GH5 4K footage in multicam shots with color grading and dynamic link to After Effects.

My question will I get full performance for all part due to the PCI lanes? Is there any bottleneck?

Thank you,
Alex

    My point about backups is that I have both internal and external backups, not just internal backups.

    I also have autosave and manual backups.

    "The only thing I would change is your backup plan; if it's in the same place as the original data, it's not a backup"

    I disagree. I use an internal backup drive for backups and autosaves and manually back up during or after difficult edits.

    Having autosaves on a separate drive is a good idea.

    I also back up to externals (on and off site) on a regular basis, depending upon how much work needs to be backed up.

    Let's discuss.

    There's no reason to store project files in a separate place from media files since you're screwed if you loose the media. There is actually a good reason to store media files next to project files and autosaves; for portability.

    If you're looking for incremental backups of your work so you can go back and undo something, autosaves fill that functionality. I would also suggest that this be done manually; duplicate and date the project at the start of each day.

    OP is considering a drive that's in his computer a backup, which is not advisable. Spill a drink on that computer, or have the power supply blow up, and he's lost everything. I would recommend he take that same 3TB drive, put it in a cheap enclosure, and leave it at his buddy's house so it's a real backup. This means of doing offsite backups is still often cheaper than AWS Glacier or Backblaze.

    Maybe "backup" in this instance is a misnomer and OP instends to use it as nearline storage.

    Now cache files, on the other hand, can often deserve their own dedicated storage bandwidth.

    Your bottleneck will be the GPU if you're adding a whole lot of effects to the footage.

    You are not contained on PCIe lanes as far as I can tell.

    Go for it. The only thing I would change is your backup plan; if it's in the same place as the original data, it's not a backup. Buy an external hard drive and leave it at your buddy's house, update it once a week or month as you see fit.
