HDD/SSD Setup for Premiere Video Editing?

Hey everyone, I edit on a weekly basis, large media files, up to 1-3tb sometimes.

I am looking to reconfigure my current hard drive storage.

Right now its :

1. 512 gb 850 pro (OS/Programs)

2. 8tb WD Gold Internal 7200rpm HDD ( Media,Project,Cache,Exports)

I have been reading on using SSD in 3-4 drive setups. But i am looking to do it like this. If it doesn't make sense let me know. I don't want to invest money into something if its not BFMB (bang for my buck)

1. 512 gb 850 pro (OS/Programs)

2. 8tb WD Gold Internal 7200rpm HDD ( Media Files)

3.  512 gb 850 pro (Project Files)

4.  512 gb 850 pro (Media Cache)

5. External HDD for Archiving all

Like i said my workflow is up to 3TB a week with media files.

Will I only be fast as my slowest drive?

Is a raid with a dedicated raid card better?

    But back to your question.

    What I would do is to invest into NVME SSD for project files and cache. SATA3 SSD is plenty enough for OS and programs, but for large files you can see the difference going from SATA to NVME. So I would recommend looking into that, something like Samsung 970.

    I would also invest into some raid for redundacy. With Raid 1 you only duplicate files to another hdd, making a backup copy. But with raid 5, you have essencialy 3 drivers working together with 1 drive as safe backup in case of the emergency.

    So this is what I would do.

    1. Your 512Gb 850 Pro (OS/Programs)

    2. Samsung NVME SSD (Media Cache, Project Files)

    3. 2x 8TB WD HDD in RAID1 or 4x 8TB WD HDD in RAID5 (Media files)

    PS: I don't know about the raid card, but I think that for like 4-6 drivers, you dont need a special raid card. Thats for like 6+ drivers and server storage.
