You don't even need to be all that handy. It's really not difficult. Just pick components that have been on the market for six months or so to make sure they're all compatible and supported.

My advice to anyone is this: if you want a reliable workhorse machine that can handle anything you throw at it and never crash - build your own. You control everything that goes in there, hardware and software. You get a pristine uncluttered Windows installation, no bloatware, no "helpful" modifications. You get a clean GPU installation, again no "helpful" modifications.

I'm on my 8th or 10th build by now, and these machines have all been bedrock solid. Never had any problems. I even do it for my work machines - I just give the IT guys a list of the components I want, and the licenses I need. I replace them after 5 or 6 years, not because they don't still work perfectly, but because the world has moved on.

I don't do this to save money (although you do). I do it for reliability. I've seen off-the-shelf machines with so much bloatware, junkware and general clutter that you can hardly find the original operating system anymore. It's asking for trouble, and trouble is what you get.

I've had a couple built by ADK years back when the current owner was the audio guy for ADK.

I had some issues with one that I couldn't resolve and wanted to upgrade the other.   I wanted to send the computers to them, only to find that they were (temporarily) shut down.  I don't remember how, but I was able to contact the former audio guy (and to be new owner) and was able to get the computers to him. He resolved my problem and upgraded the machines.

I purchased a new workstation from Puget (about 3 years ago?) and it's been working fine for me.

I haven't had any issues with it.
