Question

High end system builds for production department.

Hello,

I am working on getting quotes to upgrade my department's multiple video editing workstations.  We have a decent budget so going a bit high end.  We will only ever output to 1080i, but want to be able to use 4K assets in the near future.  I want to encourage our editors to use After Effects more, right now our systems are slow and thus they seldom use AE.

Here's the build I had in mind...

CPU:    Intel Core i9 7900X

Mobo:   ASUS TUF X299 MARK 2

RAM:   64GB DDR4 3000MHz

PSU:   1000W EVGA

GPU:  GeForce 1080 Ti 11GB

SSD1 (boot):  512GB  Samsung 850 Pro

SSD2 (cache):  512GB Samsung 960 Pro M.2

Cooling:  Liquid CPU cooler

Video I/O:  Black Magic Studio 4K

No media storage needed, we are connected to a file server via fiber.

I would love some feedback about the suitability of this build for fast renders in both Premiere and After Effects as well as smooth editing in After Effects.

Thanks!

I just recently received my first AMD Threadripper PPBM Scores and WOW my CPU intensive benchmark scored 153 seconds!  That is the third best score, better than many dual Xeons.  Unfortunately I have not yet received any Intel i9 scores but I am guessing they will not come close because intead of 16-cores, 32 thread, 4GHz and $999 as the best currently available today (9/10/2017) is only 12-cores, 24-threads at 2.9/4.3 GHz for $1200.  For that same $999 price you only get 10-cores, 20-threads.

Also extremely interesting was the fact that Max was able to test that Threadripper system with both a GTX 1080 Ti and a very new AMD Vega Frontier 16GB.  The CUDA GTX 1080 Ti absolutely beat the pants off the much more expensive Vega, as a matter of fact my pet GTX 1060 SC beats the Vega.

Thanks for that link.  What I'm seeing is that the i9 is best in Premiere Pro (which we use 95% of the time currently), but out-performed by cheaper CPUs in After Effects due to the shift to GPU usage.  While I want our team to use AE more, practically speaking it's more important to have Premiere working best.
