Question

How best to upgrade 2011 iMac for Premiere pro CC?

I am very new to video editing and have just started running Premiere on my Mac for some simple 1080p video editing.

I am finding Premiere is running slow to the point colour grading is almost impossible and making it clear my machine needs an upgrade. The trouble I am having is knowing how best to upgrade, or if an upgrade will be a complete waste of money and I need a new computer.

I am running on a mid 2011 iMac, 2.7 GHz i5, 12GB RAM, AMD Radeon 512 MB GPU and I still have a spinning disk.

As far as I can work out upgrading to a SSD may help but my GPU may be the deal breaker as it is non-upgradable.

Anyone out there any thoughts? My local computer shop was no help at all!

Thank you,

Simon

With most all-in-one computers, all you can upgrade is the internal storage and the RAM.

Switching to an SSD boot drive will give you fast boot times and Premiere will launch quickly, but color adjustment will still take as long as they're taking now.

A 21.5-inch iMac or 27-inch iMac that's 2014 or newer is your upgrade path (so, a new machine).
